Coming off a solid win at Avila University on Tuesday night, the William Woods University women's basketball team hosts Baker University on Saturday. Tipoff for the game is set for 2 p.m., and the Owls will recognize a group of returning alumni at the half.
Tomorrow's contest marks the third meeting between the teams, with William Woods owning a 2-0 record in the series. WWU won the 2011 meeting—in Baldwin City, Kan.— by a 54-50 margin and downed the Wildcats 72-54 in Baker's previous visit to Anderson Arena.
WWU enters the game with a 4-2 record and is coming off back-to-back thrilling wins.
Ashlee Taylor (Dexter, Mo.) led all scorers against Avila with 19 points, including the final eight points of the game, as
Dan Chapla's squad ran out 58-50 winners.
Sharron Andrews (Oakland/Hayward, Calif.) added a double-double with 17 pts. and 11 reb.
Both players rank nationally, with Andrews holding down the #4 spot in assists with 21, and Taylor ranking #48 in 3-pt shooting with a .435 average from distance. As a team, the Owls are also performing well, ranking 30th in blocks (14) and 19th in rebounding (231). On the defensive side, WWU has held its opponents to 58.2 pts/gm, good for 33rd among NAIA Division I teams.
Surprisingly, the Owls are at a slight disadvantage statistically coming into the game, as Baker holds a .379 to .370 edge in shooting, although WWU is better from 3-pt range (.277 to .250). The visitors also average 60.1 pts/gm to a 57.0 pts/gm pace for the Owls, but turnovers have killed Baker on the year, as they average 25 a game to WWU's 16.
Individually, Baker is led by Alisha Fanshier's 12.7 pts/gm. Fanshier has also dished a team-high 20 assists on the year, and Rae Lynne Stewart is the team's leading rebounder with 60 on the season.
