COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The William Woods University volleyball team seemed to keep its momentum from Tuesday night's highly-charged match as they rolled over Stephens College by a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-10) scoreline on Thursday night.
Emma Aschenbrenner (Broomfield, Colo.) led the Owls attack with 12 kills, with
Amanda Henley (Jefferson City, Mo.) collecting 17 digs on the night.
Although the Owls coughed up the first point of the match on a reception error, they sprinted out to a 13-2 lead in the opening set. The run forced Stephens to burn both timeouts early, with the second coming on the heels of a service ace from
Emily Becker (Belleville, Ill.), one of seven for WWU on the night.
Stephens tried to mount a run of its own to start the second set, taking advantage of a Becker attack that was judged long after looking to nip the line to mount a 5-0 spurt.
Becker and
Sarah Evans (Clever, Mo.) combined for a block to break the Stars' run at 5-1 and the Owls crept back into the set, pulling ahead 12-11. The teams traded the lead back and forth once more before WWU pulled away for the 25-17 set win.
The Owls cleared the bench in the final set, and although WWU trailed 2-0 to open the set, they pulled level at 5-5. A 13-1 put the match well out of reach, however, with WWU closing out the match in straight sets.
With the win, William Woods moves to 14-13 on the year and 8-3 in AMC action. The Owls return to Columbia on Saturday to battle Columbia College. First serve for the match is set for noon.
