Carreiro Bags Two Assists As Owls Drop Season Opener To Vikings

Kyle Konigsberg opened the scoring for the Owls with a 27th-minute strike.
Box Score FULTON, Mo. -- Marcelo Carreiro (Curtiba, Brazil) helped the William Woods University men's soccer team find the back of the net twice against no. 10-ranked Missouri Valley College, but it wouldn't be enough as the Owls fell 2-4 to the Vikings in the season opener for both teams. Kyle Konigsberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Matt Steiniger (O'Fallon, Mo.) were the goalscorers for WWU on the night.

The game got off to a very slow start as both teams tried to adjust to the conditions, but the Owls struck first in the 27th minute as Carreiro found Konigsberg for the junior's fourth career goal.

Missouri Valley was able to equalize in the 40th minute, but William Woods snuck back into the lead before the half as Steiniger took advantage of a sloppy play by the Viking goalkeeper. The senior collected a pass from Carreiro and standing about 30 yards from goal, struck a curling ball toward the back post. The shot sailed over the head of the out-of-position keeper for MVC and the Owls took a 2-1 lead into the half.

The game turned completely at the hour mark, as WWU missed an opportunity to take a 3-1 lead. Paulo Conelian (Sao Paulo, Brazil) sent a cross into the box, finding the head of Konigsberg whose effort was just barely pushed over the bar by Josh Wells.

A foul by Konigsberg a minute later set up a free kick about 40 yards out just inside the right touchline for the Vikings. The first effort came to nothing, but Bruno Hykavei was able to keep the ball alive, whipping a cross into the six-yard box to Fellipe Vurraro who headed it past a helpless Dillon Snyder (Boise, Idaho).

Fatigue began to set in as the match went on and the Owls found themselves down in the 74th minute off a Viking corner kick. Vurraro send an inswinger to the back post, where Miguel Jiminez managed to get a foot to the ball in a crowd and poke it into the net. The Vikings would add an insurance goal in the 82nd minute for the final margin.

The Owls fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Vikings move to 1-0. WWU hits the road for a pair of games this weekend, traveling to Concordia (Neb.) on Saturday. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m.
