FULTON, Mo. -- Despite a pair of very well-taken goals on the night, the William Woods University men's soccer team dropped a 2-3 result to Central Methodist University on Wednesday night.
Marcelo Carreiro (Curtiba, Brazil) and
Luca Stroeter (Sao Paulo, Brazil) struck for the Owls in the loss.
The opening goal of the match came a bit against the run of play, as
Ryan Miller (Waterloo, Ill.) was whistled for a foul about 35 yards out and to the right side of the 18-yard box.
Kyle Matthews (Simi Valley, Calif.) was the lone Owl in the wall. As Guilherme Frota struck the ball, Matthews turned and unfortunately put just enough of a deflection on it with his trailing leg that
Dillon Snyder (Boise, Idaho) wasn't able to recover after reading the initial trajectory of the shot.
Sebastian Burich (Santiago, Chile) found Stroeter in the 16th minute for the equalizer, but the tie wouldn't last long as the Owls struck again in the 18th minute.
Kyle Konigsberg (Simi valley, Calif.) laid a ball into the path of Carreiro, and the Brazilian battled through traffic with a pair of CMU defenders pawing at his shoulders. The junior broke through into space and curled the ball into the side netting at the back post.
The Owls couldn't take the lead into the half, however, as Frota leveled proceedings in the 26th minute with a blistering strike into the lower right corner. At the top of the 18-yard box, Erwin Sanchez, Jr. touched the ball into the path of an onrushing Frota.
William Woods surrendered a somewhat sloppy goal in the 62nd, as Thyago Catharino put CMU in front off an assist from Kendall Campbell.
As quickly as they were ahead, the Eagles tried to slow the game down. WWU continued to press the attack, however, but couldn't find the equalizer over the final half-hour.
WWU falls to 1-3 on the year but will have little time to dwell on the loss as they are back in action on Saturday. The Owls host Southwest Baptist College at 2 p.m. from Firley Field.
