Owls Roll To 5-1 Win Over Bearcats

FULTON, Mo. -- Multiple-point games from Danilo Carnelos (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Joao Paulo Parra (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Ryan Mann (Florissant, Mo.) helped the William Woods University men's soccer team romp to a 5-1 win over Southwest Baptist University on Saturday afternoon.

Playing into a stout wind to open the match, the Owls yielded much of the possession in the first 20 minutes to the visiting Bearcats, but a strong defensive effort held SBU without a shot through the opening stanza.

After peppering the Bearcats net with 13 shots in the first half (nine on goal), William Woods finally broke through in the 42nd minute. Parra sent a ball into space for Marcelo Carreiro (Curtiba, Brazil), with the junior collecting the pass, rounding the keeper before slotting the ball low to the far post.

The Owls would double the margin in the 50th minute, as Parra found himself on a small breakaway, striking for his 27th career goal.

WWU added another in the 64th, as Carnelos found the foot of Sebastian Burich (Santiago, Chile) who struck for a 3-0 lead.

Southwest Baptist was able to cut into the deficit on its first shot of the match, as the wind continued to play a part. A low cross was whipped in, but Dillon Snyder (Boise, Idaho) couldn't get a handle on it, spilling it to Wade Wegescheide who poked it into the back post.

The Owls would quickly reestablish a three-goal cushion with a second-effort goal in the 74th minute. Mann sent an inswinging corner kick that was cleared but not completely by the Bearcats. WWU recycled the ball back to Mann on the left endline, where he whipped another inswinger. This time Adam Roberts (Granite City, Ill.) was waiting on the back post to put the ball in the net.

Mann picked up a second assist in the 80th minute, this time crossing from the right side of the pitch. He picked out Carnelos in a crowd at the penalty spot, with the sophomore striking a spinning side-volley past a helpless Austin Haywood.

William Woods posted a 27-2 margin in shots, with 19 on goal to just one on goal for SBU. The Owls move to 2-3 on the season and are back in action on Monday night, hosting Central Christian College. Kickoff for the match is set for 6 p.m. at Firley Field.
