A 27-2 Second Half Run Gives The Owls A 69-43 Victory Over Missouri Baptist

FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's basketball team held Missouri Baptist University without a field goal for nearly 12 minutes in the second half as they defeated the Spartans 69-43 in American Midwest Conference action on Tuesday night.

Both teams would start out cold as each squad would hit one shot during the first four minutes, but the Owls led 4-3 after a pair of Destani Stensrud free throws. The pace would pick up as the Owls took an 11-10 lead with 11:52 remaining in the first half.

Missouri Baptist would go on an 8-0 run to give them an 18-11 lead with just 10:10 left in the first half. The Owls would end the run with a Priscila Santos field goal at the 9:46 mark.

WWU battled back and tied the game at 27 all after an Olivia Storjohann basket. Stensrud missed a shot at the buzzer as the two teams would go into the half tied at 27-27.

Each team would trade baskets in the second half as the game was tied at 36 with 12:26 remaining. That's when the Owls defense would go into lock down mode as they held the Spartans to only a pair of free throws in an 11:24 stretch to build a 25-point lead at 63-38. Julia Wells highlighted the run by going on a personal 8-0 run.

William Woods allowed the Spartans to score 16 points in the stanza and held them to a .179 shooting percentage. Conversely, the Owls shot a blistering .517 from the floor in the second half en route to a .410 performance for the night.

Santos led all scorers on the night with 14 points as Wells was the only other Owl in double-digits with 12. Storjohann and Scherder each chipped in eight points and Ashlee Taylor contributed seven points in her first game in over a month.

With the win the Owls move to 7-1 in AMC play and 16-2 overall. Missouri Baptist falls to 3-5 in conference play and 7-14 overall.

William Woods will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Columbia College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
