Men's Soccer Earns Hard Fought Victory Over Williams Baptist

Hawes scored the game winner for the Owls in the second half.
Box Score FULTON, Mo.—The William Woods men's soccer team tied the schools record for the most American Midwest Conference victories with four, as the Owls won a hard fought 2-1 battle against Williams Baptist College.

There were a total of 37 fouls in the game, 22 of which came in the first half alone. The Eagles (5-6; 2-4 AMC) jumped on the scoreboard first, as Matheus Allonso made a move on an Owls defender inside the 18 yard box and was able to beat goalie Evan Melone to make it 1-0 WBC in the 23rd minute.

The Owls (7-6; 4-2 AMC), totaled 10 shots in the first half, but went into halftime trailing by one goal. In the second half, the team came out much faster on the offensive side of the ball and it paid off as Marcelo Carreiro was tripped inside the 18 yard box, giving the Owls a penalty kick.

Alan Matthew took the penalty kick and blasted his shot into the left corner of the net, tying the game back up at 1-1 at the 53:39 mark. Just 4:00 minutes later, the Owls were awarded a free kick and Kyle Konigsberg's kick into the box found the foot of Jacob Hawes, giving the team a momentum changing 2-1 lead.

However, .39 seconds later, an Owls player received a red card and the team was forced to play down a man the rest of the game. Williams Baptist picked up their offense on the Owls, but the WWU defense held strong the rest of the game, kicking the ball away ending any Eagles offensive threat and they were able to hold on for the one goal victory.

The Owls held a 14-10 shot advantage in the game, led by Carreiro totaling three. Jesse Jordan, Matthew and Jordan Bay each added two. Melone picked up the victory making three saves on the afternoon.

The team will be back in action on Tuesday October 15th at home against Freed-Hardeman University. Kick-off will start at 7:00 p.m.
