Owls Set School Record With Victory Over Freed-Hardeman

Carreiro picked up his team leading eighth goal against the Lions on Tuesday night.
Box Score FULTON, Mo.--- With its 3-1 victory over Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday night, the William Woods men's soccer team has set the school record with five American Midwest Conference wins.

The previous record was four wins set in 2009 and then tied again last season. The Owls (8-6; 5-2 AMC) got on the board just 5:00 minutes into the game, as senior Marcelo Carreiro received a pass from Sebastian Burich and was able to dribble inside the 18 yard box on the right side and beat Lions goalie Zach Johnson on the far post, giving the team a 1-0 advantage.

The goal was Carreiro's eighth on the season, giving him 20 points on the year and 99 in his career as an Owl, trailing the school record holder John Hayes by just five points now.

FHU had a great scoring chance in the 23rd minute, as Christopher Campbell leaped in the air for a header inside the box on a cross from a Lions player, but Evan Melone came up with a big save on Campbell's shot keeping the Lions scoreless.

Then, at the 32:05 mark, Kyle Konigsberg kicked in his second goal on the season 25 yards out and over goaltender Johnson, pushing the lead to 2-0. The Lions, however, cut down the Owls momentum and their lead, as Nassar Sempa dribbled inside the 18 yard box and was able to flick the ball over Owls goaltender Melone, putting the score at 2-1 at the half.

The Owls offense controlled the first 45:00 minutes, having a shot advantage of 12-3. In the second half, the offense continued to have scoring chances, totaling 11. The score remained 2-1 until the 68th minute, when a Brett Hodges kick from midfield found Adam Roberts inside the box, who flicked the ball off his head to Bryan Powers, who headed in his first goal on the season extending the Owls lead back up to two goals.

Melone, who made four saves on the evening and the Owls defense kept the Lions offense shutdown the rest of the game, as the team went on for the two goal win. The Owls totaled 23 shots on the evening, with Carreiro leading the way with five.

The team will return to action this Saturday October 19th, as this will be the final home game of the regular season against Lyon College. Kick-off will start at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will be honoring its eight seniors.
