Box Score FULTON, Mo.—The William Woods men's soccer team picked up its third straight victory, as the Owls earned its second shutout of the season by defeating Lyon College 7-0.
Prior to the game, the Owls (9-6; 6-2 AMC), honored its eight seniors that included
Robertt Butvin,
Marcelo Carreiro,
Kyle Konigsberg,
Kyle Matthews,
Ryan Miller,
Joao Paulo Parra,
Bryan Powers and
Adam Roberts.
It was the Owls making a statement early on offense, as
Marcelo Carreiro scored his team leading ninth goal on the season, on assists from
Alex Severino and
Adam Roberts just 6:00 minutes into the game, to make it 1-0 WWU.
Just 12:00 minutes later, the team extended its lead to 2-0, as
Jordan Bay scored his first goal on the year on a pass from Severino his second assist of the game. Then, .35 seconds later and on the team's fourth shot of the game, Severino got on the goal column, scoring his third on the year on a pass from Carreiro, making it 3-0 Owls.
The scoring frenzy continued for William Woods, as at the 28:21 mark,
Jacob Hawes scored on an assist from Bay, to make it 4-0 WWU at the half. The Owls were able to score four goals on seven shots, and the four goal outburst ties for the most goals the team has put up in half this year.
In the second half,
Kyle Konigsberg pushed the lead to 5-0 at the 55:03 mark, as he scored on a free kick and was able to bend his shot around a wall of Lyon players just outside the 18 yard box and into the back of the net. The offense scored quickly again, this time .26 seconds later, as Carreiro scored his 10
th on the season and earned his fifth point in the game.
With his five points earned in today's game, Carreiro has now tied the William Woods career point leader John Hayes with 104 and has three games left to be the all-time new record holder.
The Owls dominated on offense the rest of the game, and with 4:00 minutes left in regulation, Konigsberg added his second of the game on another free kick to make it a final seven goal victory.
Goaltenders
Evan Melone and
Robertt Butvin combined for the shutout victory making five saves. The offense was very efficient scoring seven goals on a total 16 shots in the game.
With the victory, the Owls now stand just 0.5 games behind Columbia College in the American Midwest Conference standings.
The team has just two conference games remaining and they will be back in action in a tough road test against Park University on October 23
