Owls Defeat Stephens College To Move Into AMC Lead

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The William Woods University volleyball team posted a season-high .433 attack percentage and had three players collect double-digit kills as they move into first place in the American Midwest Conference by defeating Stephens College 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-15) on Monday night.

William Woods (13-18, 7-0 AMC) collected 47 kills and committed just five errors en route to its highest attack percentage since the 2011 season, as the Owls snapped its recent four-match losing streak with a straight set victory over the Stars (5-18, 0-5 AMC).

WWU now sits in a first place tie and hold a half game lead over No. 10 Park University. The Owls have four conference matches remaining, three of which are against the league's three Top-25 teams.

The trio of Kristen Bauer, Emily Becker, and Stephanie Davis combined for 35 kills and tallied only four attack errors on the night. Bauer led the team with 14 kills, while Becker posted 11 and Davis collected 10 in the winning effort.

Freshmen setter Sara Stevenson, who was named to the Grand View University All-Tournament Team over the weekend, handed out 28 assists to go along with six kills on a career-best .600 attack percentage. The Belleville, Ill., native was just a dig shy of collecting her fourth straight double-double.

Defensively, WWU held the Stars to a .183 attack percentage with the help of a 20-dig performance from junior libero Abbie O'Mara. As a team, the Owls collected 51 digs on the night, pushing its season total to 2,275 digs, the second-highest mark in the NAIA.

Yonne Nasimiyu collected a career-high 11 kills for Stephens College in the losing effort. Despite giving up a .433 attack percentage, the Stars had three players post double-digit digs as Tanya Avington and Samantha Phegley led the way with 11 apiece.

With William Woods clinging to an 18-17 lead, the Owls used a 7-4 run to close out the frame, taking set one 25-21. WWU never trailed in the matches' final two sets as they scored a pair of double-digit set victories en route to the straight set victory.

The Owls will play its final regular season road match on Wednesday as they return to Columbia, Mo., this time to take on No. 22-ranked Columbia College for an AMC contest. First serve for the match is set for 7 p.m.
