Box Score PARKVILLE, Mo.- The William Woods men's soccer team dropped its third overtime game on the season in tough fashion, as the Owls fell to Park University 2-1 in double overtime.
It was a very physical affair between top teams in the American Midwest Conference, as there were a total of 51 fouls, including 28 in the second half alone.
The Owls (9-7; 6-3 AMC) got off to a slow start on offense, as they were outshot 6-1 through 30:00 minutes of play in the first half by the Pirates, but the defense and goaltender
Evan Melone were able to keep the game scoreless.
Then, at the 31:23 mark,
Joao Paulo Parra received a pass from
Sebastian Burich, and the senior midfielder was able to dribble inside the right side 18 yard box, make a nice move around Pirate goalkeeper
Ryan Miller and bury his sixth goal on the season making it 1-0 WWU.
The Owls were able to hold onto that one goal lead heading into halftime, even though the Pirates had a shot advantage of 8-3 after 45:00 minutes of play and had six corner kicks to William Woods zero.
In the second half, the Pirate offense continued to pressure the Owls defense, but WWU still held strong keeping their 1-0 lead intact. In the 62
nd minute, however, the Pirates were awarded a free kick and Carlos Trombini Filho's shot was saved by Melone, but the loose ball was rebounded and put into the back of the net by Andre D'Elia tying the game up at 1-1.
The Owls were outshot 12-4 in the second half, but those four shots all came close to breaking the 1-1 tie, however, neither team could score the game winner so it was off to overtime.
Scoring chances were at a minimum in the first 10:00 minute OT, with Park having all the shots totaling three, but the score remained tied and it all came down to the final 10:00 minutes in the double OT.
WWU totaled two shots in the second overtime, with its best chance coming in the 105
th minute. The team had a corner kick and Parra's cross into the box found the head of
Brett Hodges who headed the ball just over the crossbar ending the scoring threat.
Then, .59 seconds later, Park's free kick from midfield got into the box, but was cleared away by an Owls player, however, the clearing found the foot of Kiel Williams whose shot went off an Owls defender and then the ball rolled its way into the back of the net for the game winning goal.
The Owls offense was held just to nine shots on the evening, with
Kyle Konigsberg and
Jordan Bay each contributing two shots, while in net Melone made eight saves. Park totaled 26 shots, led by Lucas Sousa having five and Miller picking up the win in net making four saves for the team.
The team will be back in action this Saturday in its final AMC game on the season on the road against Missouri Baptist University. Kick-off will start at 7:00 p.m.
