FULTON, Mo.—The William Woods men's soccer team will play its final regular season American Midwest Conference game on Saturday evening. Kick-off will start at 8:00 p.m.
The Owls (9-7; 6-3 AMC), are coming off a tough 2-1 double overtime loss on the road against Park University.
Joao Paulo Parra scored his sixth goal on the season in the 31
st minute, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Pirates were able to tie up the score at 1-1 in the 62
nd minute, as Andre D'Elia scored on a loose ball after a diving save by
Evan Melone off a Pirate free kick. That score remained the same the final 28:00 minutes of the game, so both team's prepared for overtime.
In the first OT, the Pirates had all three shots, but the Owls defense fended off any game winning goal and it all came down to the final 10:00 minutes in the second OT. The Owls had a chance to net the game winner in the 105
th minute, as a corner kick by Parra found the head of
Brett Hodges, but his header went just inches over the crossbar.
Then, just .59 seconds later, Park's free kick from midfield got into the WWU 18 yard box, but the ball was cleared away by an Owls player, however, the clearing found the foot of Kiel Williams whose shot went off an Owls defender and rolled its way into the back of the net for the game winning goal.
The loss snaps the Owls three game winning streak where the team had outscored its opponents (Williams Baptist, Freed-Hardeman, Lyon College) 12-2, including a season high seven goals against Lyon.
On offense, the Owls are led by
Marcelo Carreiro who has 10 goals, five assists and 25 points through 16 games played. The senior has 104 career points over his four-year tenure with the team, and needs just one more point to become the school's all-time record holder.
Parra, has had a strong season manning the midfield, scoring six goals, and adding five assists for 17 points, while
Sebastian Burich and
Kyle Konigsberg each have four goals on the year.
Missouri Baptist (8-5-3; 3-4-2) stand in sixth place in the AMC, as the Spartans have won two out of its last three games, however, their last time out they suffered a 3-2 road loss at the hands of Mid-Continent University.
On offense, MBU is led by Joe Wonsewith totaling 14 goals in 16 games, while also adding nine assists for 37 points. Wonsewith ranks first in the AMC in goals, points, assists and game winning goals with six.
Greg Kranz stands second on the team with six goals, and Oscar Rojas has chipped in five. Rojas will be a player to watch besides Wonsewith, as the midfielder is second on the team with seven assists and points totaling 17.
In net, the Spartans have used four different goaltenders on the year, with Corbin Rodriguez appearing in the most games (13). The Denton, Texas., native holds a team high in save percentage (.744), saves (58) and minutes played (985:48).
