Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The William Woods men's soccer team dropped its final American Midwest Conference regular season game, falling to Missouri Baptist 1-0 on Saturday night.
It was a defensive minded scoreless first half, as there were a total of just seven shots in the first 45:00 minutes of play, with the Owls (9-8; 6-4 AMC) having the most with four.
Bryan Powers contributed one of those shots in the 24
th minute, but his shot was saved by Spartan goaltender Corbin Rodriguez.
One of the better scoring chances for WWU came in the 30
th minute, as
Joao Paulo Parra dribbled down the field for the Owls and was fouled by a Missouri Baptist player just outside the 18 yard box, giving the team a free kick.
Kyle Konigsberg took the shot, but it was Rodriguez coming up with a big save, keeping the game at a 0-0 tie heading into the half.
In the second half, each offense totaled three shots in the final 45:00 minutes of play. Parra took one of the Owls shots in the 47
th minute from 20 yards out, but his shot went just wide of the far right post.
Adam Roberts and
Ryan Miller were the other Owls who had scoring chances in the second half. Both offenses looked to break the tie throughout the remaining minutes of the game, but each defense stopped nearly every scoring chance in its tracks.
Then, the 83
rd minute, the Spartans sent a bouncing pass inside the WWU 18 yard box that was kicked up high by an Owls defenseman in an attempt for a clear. Goaltender
Evan Melone jumped up to grab the ball, however, it ended up sliding through his hands and deflecting off him as he fell to the ground right to MBU's Providence Tucker who kicked the loose ball into the back of the net, handing the Owls a tough 1-0 loss.
The Owls offense was held to a season low seven shots, with Powers leading the team with two. Melone made one save on the night for WWU, while the defense kept MBU's offense in check all night holding them to six shots.
The team has one game remaining before the conference tournament begins and that will be on the road on Tuesday night against Southwest Baptist University. Kick-off will start at 6:30 p.m.
