BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- The No. 19-ranked William Woods University women's basketball team was able to erase an eight-point deficit midway through the second half, as they closed the game on a 15-8 run to record an 82-75 road win at Lindenwood University-Belleville on Tuesday night.
William Woods (4-0), who only held a brief one-point lead in the first half, found itself down 62-54 in the second frame after a Lindenwood-Belleville (6-3) three-point basket at the 11:33 mark. From that point, the Owls battled back to tie the game at 64, and closed out the half scoring 15 of the game's 23 final points to bring home a seven-point win.
"This is a great road win against a very good Lindenwood-Belleville team," expressed head coach Dan Chapla. "We were able to get to the foul line tonight and make shot clutch shots down the stretch."
WWU shot 34 free throws on the night, as they outscored the Lady Lynx 22-8 from the charity stripe. Senior Katie Scherder was one of four Owls to drain four free throws on the night, as the Bowling Green, Mo., native collected a regular season-high of 19 points.
William Woods got a clutch performance from the free throw line down the stretch, as they hit 5-of-8 from the line in the game's final 3:23 to seal the win.
"We had our veteran players out on the floor in the closing minutes, and their experience showed tonight by converting on some clutch free throws," Chapla said.
Three other WWU players also posted double-figures on the night, as Stephanie Copelin collected 15 points, Destani Stensrud posted 10, and Blake French came off the bench to provide her team with a season-best 14-point performance.
The Owls, who came into the game averaging 19.3 turnovers a game, committed just 13 miscues on the night, its lowest total of the season.
"We had some really good guard play tonight, especially Dennisha Rice, who came in off the bench and handed out six assists to zero turnovers," said Chapla.
The Lady Lynx had three players in double-figures, led by Shelby Kohrman's 20-point performance. The Owls held LU-B to 46 percent from the floor for the game, after allowing them to shoot a blistering 54 percent in the first half.
The Owls held a brief 5-4 lead to open the game, but Lindenwood-Belleville quickly erased it and built an 11-point lead at 19-8 with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. William Woods battled back and saw its deficit cut to just one point at 41-40 after an Andraquay Quinnine basket at the 1:30 mark. The team's traded baskets for the remainder of the half, as the Lady Lynx took a 45-42 lead into the break.
Lindenwood-Belleville pushed its lead out to six at 52-46 to open the second half, but a resilient WWU squad fought back to pull within one again, at 52-51 with 15:20 remaining in the game. Â From that point, LU-B went on a 10-3 run to extend its lead to eight at 62-54.
William Woods battled back again and a pair of Paige Stewart free throws tied the game up at 62-62 with 9:43 remaining. French's jumper gave WWU a 67-65 lead, its first since the 18:10 mark of the first half.
The Lady Lynx would not surrender, as they were able to tie the game at 74-74 with 3:23 left in the game. Copelin hit the front end of a double bonus to give her team a 75-74 lead. She would then miss the second shot, but French corralled the offensive rebound and hit a second chance layup to give WWU a three-point lead at 77-74.
From that point, the Owls scored five of the game's final six points to score the 82-75 win.
William Woods will be back in action on Saturday night, as they travel to NAIA Division II powerhouse College of the Ozarks. Tip-off for this game is set for 6 p.m.
