MARSHALL, Mo. -- The No. 19-ranked William Woods University women's basketball team had a trio of players post a double-digit scoring performance to help the Owls to a 74-59 season-opening victory at Missouri Valley College on Monday night.
Katie Scherder's near double-double performance led the way for the Owls (1-0), as the senior guard scored a game-high 17 points to go along with a game-best nine rebounds. Scherder was joined by Andraquay Quinnine and Destani Stensrud in the double-digit scoring category, as Quinnine tallied 14 points in her WWU debut, while Stensrud recorded 12.
William Woods had an efficient shooting night, as they shot 44.2 percent from the field and an even 50 percent from behind the arc on 9-of-18 shooting. Scherder and Quinnine connected on a pair of three-point field goals to lead the team.
Free throw shooting was a big contributor in the victory for William Woods, as they outscored Missouri Valley (0-2) 19-9 at the charity stripe. For the game, WWU shot 19-of-22 from the free throw line for a success rate of 86.4 percent.
The Owls trademark defense was on display, as WWU held the Lady Vikings to 32.8 percent from the field, and 27.3 percent on three-pointers. William Woods forced 23 MVC turnovers, as freshman center Kennedy Volkart's three steals led the team in her Owl debut.
DeVaughna Jenkins' 14-point performance led the Lady Vikings on the night, as WWU held Gabi Morales to just two points, after the senior had posted a 23-point game against William Penn University last Friday.
Missouri Valley started the game on a 7-0 run, and extended its lead to 12 at 17-5 at the 13:39 mark in the first half. William Woods responded by going on an 18-5 run of its own over the next nine minutes to take a 23-22 lead after an old fashion three-point play by Scherder.
The Owls closed out the first half on a 10-2 run to take a 33-24 lead into halftime.
MVC was able to cut its deficit to seven points after a Jenkins' layup, but after that William Woods used a 13-3 run, capped off by a Quinnine three-pointer, to push its second half lead out to 17 points.
WWU maintained its double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, and pushed the lead as high as 21 points before they scored the 74-59 victory.
William Woods returns to action on Saturday afternoon as they host Evangel University in its 2013-14 home opener. The Lady Crusaders are 1-0 on the year, after scoring a 79-66 victory over American Midwest Conference team Missouri Baptist University. Tipoff for the game is set for 2 p.m.
