Box Score FULTON, Mo.- The William Woods University women's basketball team went on the road to Stephens College on Saturday and were able to win their third game in a row, moving their American Midwest Conference record to 13-3, defeating Stephens 71-57.
In the first half, the game was tied early 5-5, but then the Owls broke the game open going on a 10-0 run taking a 15-5 capped off by a
Priscila Santos two pointer. Santos for the seventh straight game scored 20 points, ending the evening with 21 on 6-of-13 shooting.
The Stars climbed back into the game, going on an 11-4 run of their own and narrowed the William Woods lead down to 19-16. However, the Owls never relinquished their lead in the half and were able to hold on after the first 20:00 minutes, leading 34-31.
Stephens had actually had a better shooting percentage at 38%, compared to William Woods with 36% and had the advantage in the turnover battle 7-6. WWU won the battle of the boards in the first half, with 23 rebounds, while the Stars nabbed 17.
Katie Scherder was on fire in the first half for the Owls, netting 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
For the first 8:00 minutes in the second half, it was a back and forth battle between both teams. The teams in that time frame were tied three times and the Stars held a 46-45 lead at the 12:13 mark after a two point basket made by Natalie Williams.
That lead, however, didn't last long as just .12 seconds later, Santos made another two pointer, putting the Owls up 47-46 and the team never lost the lead the rest of the game. The offense and defense picked up in the final 12:00 minutes, as the Owls closed out the night on a 24-11 run, winning by 14 in a wild AMC match-up.
WWU shot an improved 42% from the field in the second half, with a telling stat being the Owls got to the free throw line 23 times, with the Stars only getting to the charity stripe six times. Scherder was the second leading scorer adding 18 points and having a team high 18 rebounds, 13 on the defensive side.
Stephanie Copelin added 11 points, going 7-of-9 from the free throw line. The Stars were led by Williams with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
The Owls improve their record to 22-4 overall and will be back in action on the road on February 21
st against Missouri Baptist in another key AMC game. Tip-off will start at 5:30 p.m.
