Scherder's Big Night Leads Owls To AMC Semifinals

Scherder scored a career-high 19 points in the AMC quarterfinal victory.
Box Score FULTON, Mo. -- The no. 23-ranked William Woods University women's basketball team will advance to the American Midwest Conference semifinals as they defeated Harris-Stowe 79-49 on Tuesday night.

Katie Scherder turned in a career-night as she scored a career-high 19 points, including a new single-game best five three-point baskets. The 5-10 guard also collected 10 rebounds to give the Bowling Green, Mo. native her second consecutive double-double.

WWU hit 12 trifectas on 42.8 percent shooting for the night. Scherder led all players with her five three-pointers. Freshman Julia Wells hit 3-of-4 from behind the line to tie her career-high of 13 points.

William Woods held Harris-Stowe to a season-low just 23.7 percent from the floor. The Owls stiff defense also held the Lady Hornets to 15 percent from behind the arc.

The Owls opened the night with a pair of three-point baskets from Olivia Storjohann and Scherder to build a 6-0 advantage.

Harris-Stowe pulled within a basket at 9-7 after a Shanique Buford three-point play, but a quick 8-2 run gave the Owls an 17-9 lead with 13:48 remaining in the half.

The Lady Hornets once again battled back to within a basket at 17-14. Once again, WWU used an extended run, this time of the 16-0 variety, to give them its first double-digit lead of the night at 33-14. Buford would end the run with a bucket at the 6:19 mark.

William Woods maintained its double-figure lead for the remainder of the first half as they took the 37-24 lead into the locker room.

The Owls scored the first six points of the second half as they gained the 43-24 advantage. William Woods took a 21-point lead with 14:55 remaining in the game after a layup by Priscila Santos.

Scherder would nail back-to-back-to-back three-point baskets to give the Owls a 30-point lead to 65-35 with 9:34 remaining.

Harris-Stowe cut the Owls lead to 25, but that would be as close as they got as William Woods advances to the AMC semifinals with the 79-49 victory.

Scherder led all players in the game with 19 points. Santos' nine-game 20-point streak came to an end as she scored 13 points in 16 minutes of play.

William Woods will be back in action on Friday night as they travel to Batesville, Ark. to faceoff with no. 17 Lyon College. Tip-off for this Top 25 AMC semifinal matchup is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
