FULTON, Mo.- The William Woods men's soccer team has won four out of its last five games and will look to continue their winning ways on the road against Central Methodist University tomorrow night. Kick-off is set to start at 5:00 p.m.
The Owls (4-3; 1-0 AMC) earned its first American Midwest Conference victory on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Mid-Continent University.
Joao Paulo Parra gave the Owls an early 1-0 lead, scoring just outside the 18 yard box.
The lead was extended to 2-0 in the 35
th minute, as
Jacob Hawes shot went off a Cougar defender and into the net for an own goal. The Owls controlled the first half, having a shot advantage of 6-4.
In the second half, MCU cut the lead down to 2-1 in the 61
st minute, but after allowing the goal, the Owls defense shut down the Cougars offense, as they got just one shot the rest of the half. Then, with .50 seconds left
Kyle Matthews scored his first goal on the season on an assist from Parra to make it a final two goal victory.
On offense, the Owls are led by Parra,
Marcelo Carreiro and
Sebastian Burich. The trio has combined for 13 of the teams' 15 goals and six of the eight assists through seven games. Parra, Carreiro and Burich rank in the top 15 in points and goals in the AMC. The team has totaled 126 shots, while holding its opponents to just 75 and the 18.00 shots per game average puts them third in the conference and 27
th in the NAIA.
This will be the 16
th meeting between the schools', with each team winning seven games and tying once. The Eagles have won the previous three meetings by a combined score of 6-3. The last time the Owls defeated CMU was in 2009, when they won 2-1.
Central Methodist (4-2-1), is on a two game winning streak of its own, defeating Jamestown 2-1 and Ottawa University 4-3. This will be the third game the Eagles have played where they square off against the AMC, as earlier this season, they fell to Columbia College 3-1 and Missouri Baptist 2-1.
The Eagles are led by Guilherme Frota and Ricardo Valsien on offense, as they have combined for 10 goals and 38 shots on the year. Erwin Sanchez Jr. will be another player to look out for, as he has scored two goals and leads the team in assists with five. In net, Carlos Ribera has manned the goal all seven games earning a goals against average of 1.77 in 660:00 minutes played.
