FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's basketball team will look to end its two-game skid on Tuesday night, as they host Benedictine University at Springfield. Tip-off for this American Midwest Conference showdown, presented by Wendy's, is set for 5:30 p.m.
The Owls (9-5; 2-4 AMC) comes into Tuesday's game looking to rebound after suffering an 87-84 loss to Missouri Baptist University. WWU scored a season-high 84 points, but it wasn't enough to lift them to victory, as Blake French's last-second three-point attempt fell just short. Saturday's defeat was the team's third loss in their last four games.
Despite the defeat, senior guard Katie Scherder equaled her season-best effort in points, as she registered a team-high 19 for the game. The Bowling Green, Mo., native has record four double-digit scoring efforts in her last five games, and she is averaging 10.8 points over her last five games.
Scherder is also the team's leading rebounder, as she is collecting 7.4 caroms per game. The 5-11 guard has posted two double-doubles on the year, and collected a season-best 14 rebounds against Williams Baptist in last Tuesday's win. As a team, William Woods is grabbing 41.1 rebounds per game, and are holding teams to 35.8 caroms against them.
Andraquay Quinnine is one of four Owls to average double-digits, as she has helped her team average 71.9 points per game, on a 41.3 shooting percentage. Quinnine has struggled of late, and just posted five points in Saturday's loss, but she still holds a team-best 12.8 points per game average on the year. The San Francisco leads the AMC in three-point shooting, as she has hit 39.3 percent of her shots from behind the arc, and has hit a league-best 33 trifectas on the year.
As a team, WWU has posted the third-highest free throw percentage in the NAIA with a 76.4 success rate. Destani Stensrud ranks 48th in the nation in free throw percentage with a 76.9 clip. Quinnine has hit a perfect 26-of-26 from the charity stripe this season, yet does not have enough attempts to qualify for any national statistics.
Like William Woods, Benedictine University at Springfield (3-11; 1-5 AMC) comes into Tuesday's contest on a two-game losing streak. The Lady Bulldogs have suffered back-to-back losses to Mid-Continent and Park University after picking up an AMC win over Stephens College.
Ryan Edwards is one of two double-digit scorers for a BenU-Springfield team that is averaging 59.5 points per contest this season, as she has tallied 13.1 points. Edwards has recorded double-figures in seven of her last eight games, and is averaging an even 12 points in six conference games.
Brittany Rush is the other Lady Bulldog to average double-digits with her 11.8 points per game. Rush recently had a three-game double-figure scoring streak snapped, as she tallied just nine points against Park University.
Stopping teams defensively has been a problem for Benedictine-Springfield all season, as they are allowing teams to score 80.8 points per contest, which is the second-highest total in scoring defense in the AMC. In fact, the Lady Bulldogs have held teams under 70 points just twice this season, and have allowed over 100 points in three contest this season.
William Woods won both games against Benedictine University at Springfield last season. The meetings were the first time that the two schools had faced each other, as WWU holds the 2-0 advantage in the all-time series.
