No. 25 Owls Suffer 65-58 Upset At Park University

Scherder collected her second double-double of the year on Saturday.
Box Score PARKVILLE, Mo. -- Katie Scherder's double-double could not lift the No. 25-ranked William Woods University women's basketball team to a victory, as they suffer a 65-58 set back in its first American Midwest Conference road game of the year at Park University on Saturday afternoon.

Scherder was one of three Owls (8-3; 1-2 AMC) to record double-digits on the day as she scored 12 points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds, to earn her second double-double of the year. The 13 rebounds are also a season-high total for the 5-10 forward.

Despite Scherder's performance, WWU had no answer for Chanell Mackey, as the guard tallied a game-high 22 points to lead Park University (3-6; 1-2 AMC) to the 65-58 upset win.

With the win, the Pirates snap the Owls 10-game winning streak in the overall series. The last win for Park in the all-time series came back on Jan. 20, 2001.

"Give Park University a lot of credit," said Head Coach Dan Chapla. "We led for most of the game, and they battled back and really took charge in the final four minutes to comeback and win. They made plays towards the end of the game that helped them win and we didn't."

The No. 25-ranked team in the nation took a two-point lead into halftime, and continued to hold its lead until the 4:23 mark when Maceky tied a game with a steal and a basket.

"We could not keep her out of the paint all day," Chapla said of the Park guard. "Her quickness gave us problems, and that is something we knew we had to handle going into this game, but she just kept attacking and we had no answer for it."

The Owls went cold down the stretch, as they hit just 1-of-6 in the game's final four minutes, and only made 2-of-4 from the free throw line in the closing minutes.

Conversely, Park University hit 9-of-12 from the line in the game's final four minutes to help seal the 65-58 upset.

Despite the loss, Blake French turned in another stellar performance, as the junior scored a team-high 13 points, grabbed five rebounds, and handed out three assists. Saturday marks the sixth straight game that the St. Charles, Mo., native has collected double-figures in scoring.

"Blake has been our most consistent player this season," expressed Chapla. "We probably played her a little too much tonight, as she logged in over 38 minutes, but we needed her energy out there. She played great tonight, as she has all season."

The team's leading scorer, Andraquay Quinnine, rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers by equaling Scherder's 12-point mark. The San Francisco native hit 2-of-6 from the three-point line to give her six consecutive games with a three-point make. Over the stretch, Quinnine has hit a team-high 15 trifectas.

William Woods continues its three-game AMC road trip, as they travel to Arkansas to take on Williams Baptist College. Tip-off for that game is set for 5:30 p.m.
