Men's Soccer Searches For Its 10th Win On The Season Against Harris-Stowe State

Hawes has tallied five goals and three assists for a team-high 13 points on the year.
FULTON, Mo.— After collecting its single season record eighth shutout on the year against Benedictine University at Springfield its last time out, the William Woods University men's soccer team will look for its ninth shutout and 10th win on the year against Harris-Stowe State University on Tuesday night. Kick-off will start at 5 p.m.

Freshman goaltender Conor Cable also tied the record for most shutouts in a single season (five), as he now sits atop the record book with Robert Thibodeaux, who has held the record since 2009.

The Owls (9-2-2; 4-2-1 AMC), outshot BenU-Springfield 21-9 on Saturday afternoon, while the team scored two goals in the first half and two more in the final frame.

WWU broke the scoreless game in the 20th minute, as Alex Severino scored his team-leading sixth goal on the year, off an assist from Luca Stroeter, to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

At the 33:19 mark, William Woods was awarded a penalty kick and senior reigning AMC Defensive Player of the Week, Alan Matthew, stepped up and scored his fourth goal on the year, to extend the teams' advantage out to 2-0 heading into the half.

It was more of a dominating performance from the Owls in the second half, as they outshot the Bulldogs, 12-5.

In the 56th minute, Jesse Jordan scored his second goal on the year, off an assist from Jacob Hawes to make it 3-0 WWU. Andrew Bernal made it a 4-0 final in the 64th minute, as the junior found the back of the net for the first time this season.

Hawes recorded a game-high five shots on the afternoon, while Jordan added four, Anthony Moscatello contributed three and Sebastian Buirch and Bernal totaled two shots a piece.

Cable, meanwhile, totaled seven saves, which now gives the Spalding, England, native, 53 on the year.

On the season, the Owls have outscored its opponents 31-7, while holding a shot advantage of 232-137. Leading the offense thus far has been Severino, who has totaled a team-high six goals on 32 shots. Hawes, meanwhile, has contributed five goals and three assists, for a team-high 13 points. Matthew and Moscatello
have added four goals each, while Jordan and Burich have totaled two apiece.

Senior Paulo Conelian has totaled a team-high eight assists, which ranks him first overall in the AMC and 19th in the NAIA, while Stroeter, has added six assists, which is sixth best in the AMC.  

In net, Cable has allowed just seven goals in 1051:30 minutes, has earned a save percentage of .883 and a goals against average of .600, which is fifth best in the NAIA.   

WWU holds an all-time record of 10-7-2 against Harris-Stowe (2-11; 0-7 AMC), including winning last years' match-up, 2-1. The Hornets grabbed an early 1-0 lead on the Owls in the fifth minute, but William Woods responded with a goal from Jordan in the 26th minute and then Severino scored the game winner in the 65th minute of the second half.

The Hornets were able to snap its five game losing streak its last time out, as they defeated St. Louis College of Pharmacy, 4-0. HSSU took a 1-0 lead in the first half, thanks to a goal from Chris Kaleta, his first of the season.

The team then went on to add three more goals in the second half, as Leopoldo Moreira and Alex Ponder (twice) also scored in the game.

In net, the Hornets have used four goaltenders and the duo of Dillen Myers and Ezekial Sevcik have each appeared in six games, starting five. Sevcik has played in 570:23 minutes, making 29 saves and has a save percentage of .604, while Myers has totaled 503:21 minutes, allowing 11 goals and holds a goals against average of 1.97.
