St. LOUIS, Mo. -- Andraquay Quinnine's 20-point performance helped the William Woods University women's basketball team defeat Missouri Baptist University, 74-61, on Saturday afternoon.
Quinnine hit 7-of-15 from the field, including 2-of-6 from the three-point line, to help William Woods (17-8, 10-7 AMC) avenge a loss they suffered to Missouri Baptist (8-16, 6-10 AMC) earlier this season in Anderson Arena. The 20-point effort marked the third straight game that Quinnine has scored at least 17 points.
The Owls turned in another solid defensive performance on Saturday, as they held MBU to just 35.4 percent from the floor and forced 20 Spartan miscues. WWU's defense held the Missouri Baptist duo of Kristyne Smyth (6 points) and Taylor Klingelhoefer (8 points) to 14 combined points. The pair scored a combined 46 points in a win against WWU earlier this season in Anderson Arena.
William Woods hit 87.5 percent from the free throw line, as they went 21-of-24 from the charity stripe. Destani Stensrud hit a perfect 8-of-8 from the line en route to her 12-point afternoon.
Blake French also tallied double-digits as she continues her impressive 2013-14 season. The St. Charles, Mo., native posted 13 points on 4-of-7 from the floor. It is the fifth time in her last six games that she has recorded double-figure in the scoring column, and is her 16th double-digit scoring game this season.
The Owls were able to pick up the victory despite being outrebounded by the Spartans 47-39. Morgan Settle paced MBU on the day with a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Seniro Katie Scherder led the way for WWU with seven caroms.
It was a nip-and-tuck contest during the game's first 20 minutes as it featured seven lead changes and five ties. Neither team was able to gain more than a five-point advantage, and the game stood even at 27-27 going into the half.
The trend continued over the first five minutes of the second half, as neither squad could pull away from one another, and was tied again at 41-41 after an Angela Talley layup at the 14:49 mark.
William Woods took a 43-41 lead on its next possession with a Quinnine jumper. Â The Owls would not relinquish their lead for the remainder of the contest, and gained control of the game thanks to a 20-3 run, that turned a two-point advantage into a game-high 19-point lead with 3:24 remaining.
Missouri Baptist cut its deficit to single-digits with a Jasmine Jackson steal and basket to pull within nine points, but that would be as close as MBU would get as William Woods held on for the 74-61 victory.
WWU will be back in action on Tuesday night, as they travel to Illinois to take on Benedictine University at Springfield. The Owls will be going for the season sweep after defeating the Lady Bulldogs 88-55 in Anderson Arena back on Jan. 14. Tip-off for this AMC contest is set for 5:30 p.m.
