Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Despite having a shot advantage of 20-5 against Avila University on Sunday afternoon, the William Woods University men's soccer team tied the Eagles 1-1 (2OT), after 110:00 minutes of play.
Reminiscent of last years' game, the Owls (1-0-1) outshot the Eagles (0-1-1) 7-1 in the first half, but despite the offensive pressure in the first 45:00 minutes of play, WWU was unable to find the back of the net.
Registering shots in the first half for the Owls included,
Matheus Schmid,
Jacob Hawes,
Paulo Conelian (2),
Julian Wells (2) and
Sebastian Burich.
In the second half, in the 49
th minute, a foul and a yellow card was issued to an Avila player inside the box, awarding a penalty kick to WWU.
Senior
Alan Matthew, who scored both of his goals' last year on penalty kicks, capitalized on the mistake by Avila, scoring his first goal on the 2014 season and third from the penalty dot, giving the Owls the 1-0 lead at the 50:22 mark.
Avila, however, responded at the 51:54 minute mark, as Louis Gallagher, who scored the lone goal last year for Avila in their 1-0 win at WWU, struck again, which tied the game up at 1-1.
As the game went on, the offensive pressure for WWU continued and at the 71:44 mark, things turned in their favor, as two Avila players received red cards, putting the Eagles down two players the rest of the game.
The Owls would go on to record four more shots, including one by
Alex Severino that was saved by Eagle goaltender Jesus Revilla at the 87:37 mark, but the game remained tied and it was off to overtime.
In the first overtime, it was all WWU, as the team totaled three corner kicks and two shots, but neither team could score the game winner, so more extra time was needed in double overtime. In the second OT, the Owls had a shot advantage of 3-2, but despite the effort, the team couldn't score and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Burich and Wells led the Owls with four shots each, Severino contributed three, while Hawes, Conelian and Schmid totaled two. In net, freshman
