Box Score FAYETTE, Mo.—The William Woods University men's soccer team extended its winning streak to four games on Wednesday night, as the Owls defeated Central Methodist University 3-1 for the first time since 2009, in a make-up game from Tuesday, which was postponed due to weather conditions in Fulton, Missouri.
The Owls (5-0-1), jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 8:41 minute mark of the first half, as a cross from
Brett Hodges, found the head of
Alex Severino, who buried his fourth goal of the season, giving WWU an early advantage.
Then, less than two minutes later, senior
Paulo Conelian, who leads the team in assists (six), scored his first goal on the season from 23 yards out on a free kick, giving WWU a 2-0 lead. The team was able to maintain its two goal advantage the rest of the half, while outshooting the Eagles (2-2) 8-7.
In the second half, WWU was able to extend its lead to 3-0, as
Sebastian Burich also scored his first goal on the year from 12 yards out in the 77
th minute.
As the clock continued to tick down, the Owls, who hadn't allowed a goal in 271:12 minutes of play entering tonight's outing, were looking for its fourth straight shutout.
The Eagles, however, played spoiler in the 86
th minute, as Tyler Neis scored his fourth goal on the year, beating goaltender
Conor Cable, who was recently named American Midwest Conference (AMC) and NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week. The goal unfortunately ended the shutout streak at an impressive 357:58 minutes for Cable and the Owls.
WWU was still able to hold onto its two goal lead the final three minutes of play and extend its winning streak to four, while keeping its undefeated 2014 season alive.
Each team totaled 14 shots in the game and the Owls were led by the duo of Conelian and
Luca Stroeter, who contributed a team-high three shots. Severino added two, while six other Owls totaled one shot on goal. Meanwhile, in net, Cable stood tall and made four saves on the night.
William Woods will now start AMC play this Saturday, as they travel down south to Batesville, Arkansas and go toe-to-toe with Lyon College. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
