FULTON, Mo.—The William Woods University men's soccer team will look to win its third straight game and stay undefeated at home on Tuesday night, as the Owls take on Missouri Baptist University. Kick-off is set to start at 7 p.m. at Firley Field.
The Owls (7-1-1; 2-1 AMC), are coming off a 2-0 win on the road at Williams Baptist College on September 27
th, as the Owls scored two first half goals and earned its fifth clean sheet on the season.
The scoring got started for WWU at the 34:59 mark, as sophomore
Anthony Moscatello scored his fourth goal on the year, off an assist from
Jacob Hawes, to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
Then, at the 40:49 mark, freshman
Julian Wells, a Temecula, California, native, scored his first collegiate goal as an Owl, on an assist from senior
Paulo Conelian, giving the Sao Paulo, Brazil, native, eight on the year and the Owls a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
It was more of a defensive battle in the second frame, as both teams' were limited to four shots each, but the Owls defense and freshman goaltender
Conor Cable kept the shutout intact, as WWU held on for the two goal win.
On the season, the Owls have outscored its opponents 25-5 and have outshot its foes 158-100. Leading the WWU offense has been
Alex Severino, who has a team-high five goals and is second on the Owls in shots (21).
Hawes and Moscatello have each found the back of the net four times, while senior
Alan Matthew has scored three goals, all from the penalty spot.
Conelian leads the team with eight assists, which currently ranks the senior first in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) and fourth in the NAIA. Fellow senior
Luca Stroeter, is second on the team, having four assists, while three other Owls have added two.
In net, Cable has been stellar all season, as the Spalding, England, native, has made 34 saves in 761:30 minutes played, allowed just five goals, has a save percentage of .872 and a goals against average of .590, which is eighth best in the NAIA.
The Owls will be looking for redemption against a Missouri Baptist University (0-7-2; 0-2 AMC) team, that stunned WWU with a 1-0 victory last year, as the Spartans held William Woods to a season low seven shots.
Coming off a 9-6-3 overall record in 2013, MBU is still searching for its first win on the 2014 season, as the Spartans have been unable to score more than one goal in a game, while six of its losses, have come by two goals or less.
On the season, the Spartans are led by Gerardo Espinoza with two goals and four points, while Jamie Skillen has scored one goal, but leads the team in assists (two) and shots (18). Also tallying one goal for MBU, has been Joseph Wonesewith and Ryan Krupp.
In goal, the duo of John Schnurbusch and Zach Koeller have combined to play 788:19 minutes in net, allowing 14 goals, made 61 saves and earned a save percentage of .813. Schnurbusch has appeared in one more game than Koeller (5-4), while holding a better goals against average (1.47-1.75) and save percentage (.865-.696).
