Women's Basketball Looks To Snap Its Three Game Skid Against Harris-Stowe State

Lateju looks to build off her first double-double on the season against the Hornets.
FULTON, Mo.—The (RV) William Woods University women's basketball team will look to snap its three-game skid on Tuesday night in front of the home crowd, as the Owls take on Harris-Stowe State University. Tipoff will start at 5:30 p.m.

The Owls (8-4; 4-3 AMC), are coming off a tough 73-72 loss in its last time out against Lindenwood University-Belleville. The team had a couple chances to win the game with .17 seconds left, but its shot attempts rimmed out, which allowed the Lady Lynx to hold on for the one point victory.

WWU shot 39.4 percent from the floor in the outing, while hitting 47.1 percent of its shots from downtown and 70.6 percent from the free throw line.

Leading the way offensively was junior Nia Lateju, as she recorded her first double-double on the season, having a team-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Blake French, a St. Charles, Missouri, native, scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Dennisha Rice added a career-high 12 points off the bench.

In American Midwest Conference (AMC) play thus far, the Owls are scoring 69.0 points per game, while limiting its foes to just 54.7 points and a 36.2 percent success rate from the field.  

Lateju is averaging 12.4 points through seven AMC games, while hitting 47.1 percent of her shots from the floor. French is scoring 10.6 points, while having a field goal percentage of 59.6 percent, and a free throw percentage of 81.3.

On the season, the Owls are posting 71.2 points per game, while shooting 42.4 percent from the floor, 71.7 percent from the free throw line and are outrebounding its opponents, 507-422.

Lateju is pacing the offense thus far, averaging a team-high 13.1 points per game, shooting 44.8 percent from the floor and 71.7 percent from the charity stripe.

French, a St. Charles, Missouri, native, is shooting a team-high 56.5 percent from the floor and 86.1 percent from the free throw line, which is sixth best in the NAIA, while also averaging 12.1 points per game.

Sophomore Kennedy Volkart is scoring 9.3 points per game, but leads the team in rebounds (73) and blocks (14), while junior Marissa Webb is averaging 8.0 points, shooting 46.1 percent from the floor and draining a team-high 42.5 percent of her shots from the three point arc.

The Owls have had success against Harris-Stowe (4-7; 3-4 AMC), as WWU is 61-9 in its all-time meetings, including sweeping the season series last year against the Hornets, winning the first game 81-59, while taking the finale, 75-55.

After going 5-27 overall last year and going 3-19 in the AMC during the 2013-14 season, HSSU is already off to an impressive start, winning four of the 11 games thus far, three of which coming in the AMC.

The team has had its struggles as of late, dropping four of its last five, including suffering its second consecutive loss against Missouri Baptist University on January 3rd, as the Hornets fell, 71-68.

Mia Wesley led the offense on the day, scoring a game and career-high 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting, while also going 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in 40:00 minutes of play. Kyera Smith contributed 10 points, while Lorraine Pitchford totaled seven points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

On the season, the Hornets are scoring 61.8 points per game and are led by Wesley, averaging 17.8 points through six games of action. Alexis Minner is averaging 13.3 points, while KeAris Vaughn is scoring 9.5 points per game.

Pitchford will be another player to look out for, as she is averaging 10.5 rebounds per game, to go along with her 8.3 points per game.
