Box Score MOUNT MERCY, Iowa.—The William Woods University men's soccer team suffered a tough non-conference loss on Saturday, as the Owls fell to (RV) Mount Mercy University, 3-2.
The scoring got started in the sixth minute for the Mustangs (14-4; 0-1 Independent), as Marco Fichtner scored his team-high 13th goal on the year, off an assist from Mohamed Hamed, to make it a 1-0 game.
That score remained the same for just under 4:00 minutes, however, as off a corner kick from
Lendell Louis-Jacques,
Alex Severino was able to net the equalizer, his ninth on the season, tying the score up at 1-1.
Despite both teams' efforts, neither could squad could take the lead, so as they headed to the break, the score remained tied 1-1. Mount Mercy totaled nine shots in the game, while the Owls (8-5-3; 4-3-3 AMC) were held to just four.
In the second half, the Mustangs were able to retake the lead in the 54
th minute, as a foul was called on a WWU player inside the 18 yard box. Mount Mercy was awarded a penalty kick and they were able to capitalize, as Fichtner scored his second of the game, to put the scoreboard at 2-1.
In the 70
th minute, the Mustangs were able to extend its lead to 3-1, as Stefan Arsenovic scored his second goal on the year. The Owls, who totaled 10 shots in the second half, cut the lead down to 3-2, off a goal from
Julian Wells in the 79
th minute, but the team couldn't complete the comeback, as they fell by one goal.
WWU totaled 14 shots in the outing and were led by Severino having five, while Wells contributed three off the bench. In goal,
Bridger Pretz and
Cody Matthews combined for four saves.
The Mustangs, meanwhile, added 16 shots and were led by Fichtner having a game-high eight. In net, Tomas Zajfert picked up the win, making six saves.
The Owls will look to close out the regular season on a high-note, as they jump back into American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on Tuesday, as the host Central Baptist College on Senior Night. Kick-off will start at 7 p.m.
