Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Woods University women's basketball team overcame a cold shooting first half on Saturday afternoon, to defeat Harris-Stowe State University 56-50 and capture is second American Midwest Conference (AMC) victory of the season.
The Owls (5-2: 2-2 AMC), had a rocky start to the AMC square-off in St. Louis, Missouri, as the team ended the first half shooting just 7-for-31 (22.6 percent) from the floor and 1-for-7 (14.3 percent) from three point line.
Meanwhile, HSSU, shot 32.4 percent (12-of-37) from the field and were a hot 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Hornets came out of the gate with the momentum, outscoring the Owls in the first half 33-16, which gave HSSU a commanding 17 lead heading into the locker room.
Coming out of half time, the Owls knew they needed to get its offense going if they wanted to escape with the victory and they did just that. The final two quarters of the match-up was nothing less than a hard fought battle between both teams, as the Owls took control outscoring HSSU 40-17, which was complete contrary of the first half of play.
With the clocking winding down, WWU was able to hit a couple key baskets and sink frees throws down the stretch to edge Harris-Stowe State University in a come from behind 56-50 win.
William Woods finished the day shooting 33.9 percent from the floor and 68.2 percent from the free throw line, as the team held HSSU to just 6-of-38 from the field in the second frame, shooting 24.0 percent for the game.
April Gebke led the way for the Owls with a game-high 14 points, shooting 5-for-12 from the floor, while the senior duo of
Kendra Vernatti and
Julia Wells each chipped in 11 points.
Nia Lateju also had a strong display, netting nine points and grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.
The Owls return to the court on December 14
th , as the team will step outside AMC play and pay Missouri Valley College a visit. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
