Women's Basketball Looks To Knock Off No. 1-Ranked Freed-Hardeman University On Saturday

HENDERSON, Tenn.—The (RV) William Woods University women's basketball team will look to bounce back and pick up an upset victory against No. 1-ranked Freed-Hardeman University on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff will start at 2 p.m.

The Owls (16-6; 12-5 AMC), are coming off a tough 71-62 loss against No. 18-ranked Lyon College on Thursday night, which snapped the teams' season-high eight game winning streak.

The team shot 41.3 percent from the floor and 82.6 percent from the free throw line. Senior Destani Stensrud filled up her stat line, as the Exeter, Missouri, native, scored a season-high 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting, went 8-of-8 from the charity stripe, tied teammate Nia Lateju for a game-high seven rebounds and added another game-high, with five steals.

Sophomore Kennedy Volkart contributed 12 points and six rebounds, while Lateju added nine points and seven rebounds. Seniors Blake French and Dennisha Rice each totaled seven points, while combining for five assists.

On the season, William Woods is scoring 71.4 points, while shooting 41.5 percent from the floor, 69.7 percent from the free throw line and have outrebounded its opponents, 894-726.

Lateju, a Norwalk, California, native, leads the offense with a 12.3 points per game average, while the junior is hitting 45.0 percent of her shots from the field and has grabbed down 122 rebounds, which is second-best on the team.

French, is scoring 11.3 points, while shooting a team-high 52.2 percent from the floor and 80.0 percent from the free throw line. The St. Charles, Missouri, native, has also totaled 45 assists and a team-high 35 steals.

Volkart continues to play well on both ends of the floor, as the sophomore is averaging 9.7 points, while leading the team in rebounds (137) and blocked shots (24).

Since returning from injury, Stensrud has been on a tear, as she has upped her season average to 7.4 points, while shooting 43.8 percent from the floor and has dished out a team-high 55 assists. Junior Marissa Webb is averaging 7.3 points, while Rice is averaging just over 6.0 points per game (6.2).

As a team, the Owls rank in the top 20 in eight different categories in the NAIA, which include ranking 11th in total rebound margin (8.0), 15th in 3-point field goal percentage (34.0 percent), 15th in defensive rebounds per game (29.5), 17th in 3-point field goals made per game (6.8), 19th in assists per game (15.7), 19th in total 3-point field goals made (144) and 20th in assist/turnover ratio (0.988)

The last time these two teams' met was back on December 16th inside Anderson Arena and the No. 1-ranked Lady Lions (22-1; 17-0 AMC), were able to defeat William Woods, 91-58, with 55 of its points coming in the second half.

Since its season-opening forfeit loss against Martin Methodist, Freed-Hardeman has been nearly unstoppable, as they have won 22 straight games, including coming off a 76-55 win over Missouri Baptist University on Thursday.

In that outing, the Lady Lions shot 41.8 percent from the field and were led by forward Hayley Newby, whom scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting and added nine rebounds.

Grace Alonso de Armino tallied 18 points, eight rebounds and six steals, while Taleeah Cross added 11 points.

On the year, FHU is posting 82.9 points, while shooting 42.4 percent from the floor and hold a rebounding advantage of 996-682 through 23 games played.
Newby is leading offense thus far, averaging a team-high 18.2 points, while hitting 51.7 percent of her shots from the floor and has grabbed down 202 rebounds.

Alonso de Armino is scoring 14.6 points and leads the team with 287 rebounds, while Paige Melville and Cross are averaging 12.0 and 11.6 points per game respectively and have tallied 82 assists each.
