FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team will take a break from its American Midwest Conference (AMC) part of its schedule on Saturday, as the Owls host Bethany College with the first whistle scheduled at 1:00 p.m. at Firley Field.
In the Owls (2-3-1; 0-1-1 AMC), last outing, the team couldn't find the answer against AMC foe Columbia College, as they fell 0-2 on Thursday night. Statistically, both teams match-up evenly, totaling 21 shots a piece. However, it was the Cougars who found the back of the net twice for the win.
WWU had many scoring opportunities on the night, two of them which came with time winding down in the first half,
Rodrigo Alves andÂ
Harrison Bray had two shots on goal to try to tie the game up before going into the locker room but Columbia's Iain Mcturk came up with both saves, giving the Cougars to 1-0 lead at half.Â
Despite WWU coming out of the half with more energy, outshooting CC 14-9 in the second frame, the Cougars would add another goal to its advantage at the 69
th mark and go on to secure the 2-0 win over the Owls.
William Woods offensively, was led by
Jesse Jordan with five shots, meanwhile Bray added four shots and
Brett Hodges collected three shots. In the net,
Conor Cable recorded four saves on the night.Â
On the season, the Owls offense has held a marginal advantage over its opponents, outscoring them 11-9. This success has been in large help of senior
Alex Severino, who has lead the Owls in goals (five), shots (13) and points (11). The Wildwood, Missouri native is tied for fourth place in the AMC with his five goals on the season, which is also good enough for 37
th best in the NAIA. Lendell Louis-Jacues has recorded a team-high three assists, while Cable has pushed his total saves up to 18.
Bethany College is coming off a 8-10-2 overall record and a 5-2-2 record in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2014. From last season the Swedes are without the service of their offense standout, Lucas Procopio, who led the team in goals (five), assists (six), shots (37) and points (16). Bethany also will have a new face in the net, after graduating three-year starter Kayp Vaz, who totaled 101 saves in 1640:48 minutes of play last season.
The Swedes are currently off to a rocky start to its 2015 season, holding a 1-5 overall record, while in its last outing, Bethany College fell 0-2 to Central Methodist University last Friday night. \
On the season, Trevor Kistler paces the way for the Swedes with a team-high three goals and is tied with three other teammates with two assists. Luis Pinto is a top in the shot department for Bethany, amassing 16 on the year with two goals scored and meanwhile in the net, Jose Sanchez has collected 44 saves in five games.
"We are looking forward to getting back on the pitch and getting the bad taste of last night's loss out of our mouths," said head coach
Nathan Mason. I am excited to see how the guys respond on the field tomorrow."
