FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team is in search of its 15th win on the season and looks to pick up its 10th American Midwest Conference (AMC) victory, with a re-match against Missouri Baptist University Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
The Owls (14-6, 9-5 AMC), are looking for revenge against the AMC foe of MBU, as the last meeting back on December 3rd the Spartans cruised past WWU with a 84-61 victory and handing the Owls, at the time, its second AMC loss on the season.
WWU hopes for a different scenario in the second time through AMC play, as the Owls had a cold night shooting and didn't have an answer for the dominating offense of MBU, who outscored WWU 49-28 in the second half.
The Owls were led by Nia Lateju, as the senior forward posted 11 points and five rebounds, while Kennedy Volkart and Julia Wells each contributed eight points. Marissa Webb and Kendra Vernatti also chipped in seven points a piece for WWU.
Missouri Baptist, meanwhile, ended the night shooting 52.5 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from downtown, as Jerica Hawkins led the Spartans with a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds.
On the season, the Owls are posting 65.1 points per game, on 38.8 percent shooting from the field. Lateju continues to sit atop with 12.7 points per game, while shooting an impressive 44.1 percent from the field and is third on the team with 140 total rebounds on the year.
Kennedy Volkart has pushed her season average up to 10.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Kelsey Scherder and April Gebke each own a season average of eight points per game, while Gebke leads the team in steals (25) and assists (67).
MBU enters the match-up with a 7-9 overall record and a 6-7 record in conference. The Spartans have currently won three of their last five games, most recently defeating Stephens College 56-41 last week.
Jerica Hawkins paces the Spartans in several categories, which includes points per game (14.7), field percentage (53.9), steals (32) and rebounds (108). Another player the Owls will have to keep an eye on is Taylor Klingelhoefer, who is averaging 11.6 points per game and is leading the team beyond the arc with 22 three pointers on the year.
