FULTON, Mo. – After coming off a 66-57 win over Missouri Baptist University, The William Woods University women's basketball team will look to capture its third win in a row on Saturday, as the Owls host Harris-Stowe State University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
At halftime of the women's game against the Hornets, WWU will be inducting its 2016 Hall of Fame inductees, Colleen Dailey, Larry York and Sue and Dana Anderson in the William Woods University Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Owls (15-6; 10-5), picked up another important American Midwest Conference (AMC) victory against the Spartans, as the team finished the night shooting 47.3 percent from the floor, 23.1 percent from the three-point line and went 11-of-19 from the free throw line.
Leading the way for WWU was junior forward
Kennedy Volkart, as the Russellville, Missouri native, scored 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting and lead the team with eight rebounds on the night.
April Gebke also added another impressive outing to her resume, scoring 11 points and added an impressive six rebounds for the point guard, while
Bailey Rollins,
Nia Lateju and
Kendra Vernatti each chipped in seven points apiece.
After dropping two back-to-back games against Columbia College and Lyon College, who are both ahead of WWU in conference standings and ranked in the top 10 in the Nation, the Owls have responded with two consecutive wins.
Volkart has scored in double figures in the past two games, shooting over 50.0 percent from the field and free throw line, while also adding 15 rebounds to her season total which is now up to 151, which is good enough for second on the team.
On the season, the Owls are posting 65.1 points, while hitting 39.1 percent of its shots from the floor and are outrebounding its opponents 943-791.
Senior
Nia Lateju paces the offense thus far, averaging 12.3 points per game on 43.0 percent shooting and is third on the team in rebounds (148). Volkart is right behind Lateju, scoring 10.4 points per game, while coming in second on the team in rebounds (151).
Junior duo of
Kelsey Scherder and
April Gebke are both scoring just under nine points a game (8.7 ppg) and (8.1 ppg), respectively. Senior
Julia Wells continues to lead the team in rebounds with 160 on the year, while her 3.6 offensive rebounds per game, ranks her No. 11 in NAIA.
Harris-Stowe State University, (10-11; 8-7 AMC), are coming off a 72-64 deficit to No. 6 ranked Columbia College in its last outing, dropping them to the fifth seed in conference standings.
Despite, WWU coming away with the 56-50 victory over the Hornets in the team's first meeting with HSSU earlier this year. It was no walk in the park, as HSSU held a commanding 33-16 lead over WWU at the half, before the Owls erased the 17 point deficit for the come from behind win.
On the season, Angela Randall and Cierra Stanciel, have been key offensive players for the Hornets, averaging 11.3 points per game and 11.0 points per game, respectively. Monae Riley leads the team with 130 rebounds on the year, averaging 6.3 per game.
