FULTON, Mo. - The (RV) William Woods University women's basketball team looks to reel in its sixth straight American Midwest Conference (AMC) game, as the Owls host Williams Baptist College Thursday night, for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
The Owls (11-3, 6-2), are coming off a remarkable come from behind win on the road last night, that saw WWU close the second quarter on a 17-0 run, to then keep its composure down the stretch of regulation to hold on to a 68-65 victory over Lindenwood University-Belleville.
William Woods ended the night shooting 32.9 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from the charity stripe, while LU-Belleville shot 35.5 percent from the floor and went 7-for-24 from beyond the arc.
The Owls had two strong displays from seniors,
Nia Lateju and
Julia Wells, as both gave WWU the liveliness with their double-double performances. Lateju, ended the night with a team-high 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Wells chipped in 10 points and 12 boards.
Kennedy Volkart also had a resilient night for WWU, collecting 12 points and nine rebounds.
William Woods has had a strong outing in AMC play, as the team is currently tied in third seed, while riding a five game win streak. In those five games, WWU have outscored its opponents 311-242, while averaging 62.6 points and holding teams to just 48.4 points per game. The Owls also, have put together a late surge offensively, outscoring its opponents in the final half 172-128, while shooting 35.9 percent from the field.
On the season, Lateju continues to have a stellar senior season, as the forward is averaging a team-high13.0 points, on 46.7 percent shooting from the field. She is also third on the team with 100 rebounds on the year, averaging 7.1 per game. Volkart, fellow forward, also has been an offensive impact for the Owls, as the junior is posting 9.4 points per game, while leading the team with 106 rebounds on the year.
Transfer point guard
April Gebke, has been a the quarter back in the back court for the team, as she leads the team in assists (53) and steals (17), while pushing her season average up to 7.6 points per game. Then of late, senior
Julia Wells, has shown her tenacity on the boards, while she has collected double-figure rebounds in the last three games, pushing her season total up to 105, which is good enough for second on the team.
Williams Baptist College enters the AMC match-up with an overall record of 8-4 and a 3-4 record in conference play. The Eagles are currently on a three game skid, as the team fell 76-45 to the No. 13 ranked Freed-Hardeman earlier this week.
WBC has three players averaging in double-figures on the season, as Alytrius Perry leads the team with 13.0 points per game, on 32.3 percent shooting from the floor, while Alisha Stone is right behind Perry, averaging 12.1 points per game, while leading the team from beyond the arc going 24-of-67 and shooting a team-high 87.5 from the free throw line. To wrap up the three leading scorers for the Eagles, is Da'Monique Brown who is averaging 11.2 points per game, while Porche Hall leads the team with 110 rebounds on the year.
