Women’s Basketball Looks to Get Back in the Win Column

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball looks to snap a two game losing streak when they return to Anderson Arena on Thursday, Feb. 25th to host Stephens College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Owls (19-9, 14-8 AMC), suffered its second straight loss in a row to Freed-Hardeman University, 73-50, in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Game of the Week, presented by Stretch. The losses and the wins for Harris-Stowe State University dropped WWU to fifth in the AMC standings.  

Against Freed-Hardeman, the Owls shot a season-low 31 percent from the floor and were 2-of-10 shooting from behind the arc. Julia Wells was the lone bright spot for the Owls, as the senior was the only player in double-figures scoring with 20 points and she collected her third straight 10 rebound game. Wells had collected a double-double in two of the last three contests.

On the season, the Owls are posting 65.7 points per game, while hitting 39.3 percent of its shots from the floor and are outrebounding its opponents 1,216-1,043. WWU is collecting 43.4 rebounds per game, which is eighth in the nation. On the defensive side of the ball, the Owls are only allowing teams to shot 34.3 percent from the floor, the fourth best in the nation. On the glass, WWU has three players averaging more than 6.5 rebounds per game.

Senior Nia Lateju paces the offense thus far, averaging 11.8 points per game on 42.3 percent shooting and is third on the team in rebounds (191). Volkart is right behind Lateju, scoring 10.4 points per game, while coming in second on the team in rebounds (193).

Junior duo of April Gebke and Kelsey Scherder are both scoring just under nine points a game (8.3 ppg) and (8.3 ppg), respectively. Senior Julia Wells continues to lead the team in rebounds with 218 on the year, while her 3.6 offensive rebounds per game, ranks her No. 13 in NAIA.

Stephens College, (6-23, 4-19 AMC), are coming off a 58-50 victory over Saint Louis College of Pharmacy on Saturday February 20th. Briana Clark came off the bench for the Stars and scored a game-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

On the season, Dana Heggemann has been leading the Stars in scoring as she is the only player averaging in double-figures as she is averaging 10.5 points per game. Clark follows averaging 8.0 points per game. The Stars are shooting 34.6 percent from the floor. Bailey Taylor leads the team in rebounding as she is averaging 5.2 rebounds per game.
 
William Woods looks for the sweep against Stephens on Thursday night. Earlier this season on January 14th, William Woods came away with an 82-64 victory over the Stars. William Woods raced out to a 26-12 after the first quarter and never looked back on their way to the 18 point victory. WWU shot 46 percent from the field and hit seven three pointers in the win.
