FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball looks to build off their Thursday night victory when they return to Anderson Arena on Friday, February 27th to host Columbia College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. This game is presented by Cost Cutters.
The Owls (20-9, 15-8 AMC), snapped a two game losing streak on Thursday night with a 70-50 victory over Stephens College in AMC action. The Owls currently sit in fifth place in the AMC standings.
Both offenses came out sluggish in the first quarter as both teams combined for four points during the first four minutes of action. Once the basketball started falling, the Owls slowly started to build a lead and pull away from the Stars. WWU shot 48 percent from the floor in the win.
Kennedy Volkart led the Owls with 13 points.
On the season, the Owls are posting 65.9 points per game, while hitting 39.6 percent of its shots from the floor and are outrebounding its opponents 1,254-1,079. WWU is collecting 43.2 rebounds per game, which is tenth best in the nation. On the defensive side of the ball, the Owls are only allowing teams to shot 34.1 percent from the floor, the fourth best in the nation. On the glass, WWU has three players averaging more than 6.5 rebounds per game.
Senior
Nia Lateju paces the offense thus far, averaging 11.7 points per game on 42.5 percent shooting and is second on the team in rebounds (199). Volkart is right behind Lateju, scoring 10.5 points per game, while coming in third on the team in rebounds (198).
Junior duo of
April Gebke and
Kelsey Scherder are both scoring just under nine points a game (8.4 ppg) and (8.1 ppg), respectively. Senior
Julia Wells continues to lead the team in rebounds with 221 on the year, while her 3.5 offensive rebounds per game, ranks her No. 16 in NAIA.
Columbia College, (26-3, 20-3 AMC), are coming off a 110-48 victory over Park University on Thursday February 25th. Petrolina Chilaka scored 18 points leading the Cougars to the victory. Columbia held the Pirates to one point in the first quarter and pulled away early as they led 27-1 after the first quarter.
On the season, Corri Hamilton has been leading the Columbia in scoring as she is averaging 15.0 points per game. Chilaka follows averaging 13.0 points per game. The Cougars are shooting 43.0 percent from the floor. Hamilton leads the team in rebounding as she is averaging 7.5 rebounds per game.
William Woods looks for the series split on Saturday against Columbia. In the previous meeting earlier this season, Columbia defeated William Woods, 77-54. The Owls struggled shooting the ball as they shot 34 percent for the game and only had two players score in double figures. William Woods shot 6-for-15 from behind the arc in the contest.
