Women’s Basketball Plays Vanguard In NAIA Quarterfinals

BILLINGS, Mont. – For the first time in school history, the William Woods University women's basketball team will play in the Quarterfinals of the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship, presented by Wells Fargo. The Owls will play the second seed of the Liston Bracket, Vanguard University, at 9 p.m. CT on Saturday evening.
 
NAIA National Championship
- The 37th annual NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship, presented by Wells Fargo will be held at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark in Billings, Mont. March 15-21
- The NAIA Network – the association's official video streaming home – will broadcast the first 30 games leading up to the championship final on ESPN3. The video platform, powered by Stretch Internet, allows users access to live video, statistics, and social interaction on a number of devices, including mobile. About the Owls
- For the first time in school history, the Owls have won two games at the national championship. With the win the win over John Brown on Friday night, WWU advances to the quarterfinals
- With the win, the Owls improved to 22-11 on the season
- Entering the quarterfinals, William Woods is averaging 76.0 points per game, which is the fifth most during the national championship
- On the season, Jasmine Brown leads the Owls as she is averaging 14.8 points per game. She scored 24 points, to lead the Owls, to the victory over Shawnee State in the First Round. Brown did not play against John Brown
- WWU is averaging 71.8 points per game on the season and are only allowing its opponents to score 63.1 points per game
- WWU is shooting 39.7 percent from the floor in the national championships
Jasmine BrownApril Gebke and Peyton Greenlee received All-AMC honors this season. Brown earned First Team honors, Gebke named Third Team and Greenlee earned Honorable Mention honors
- With the win over John Brown, the Owls improve to 4-9 all-time in the national championship
 
About the Lions
- The Lions are the second seed in the Liston Bracket and enter the contest with a record of 29-3
- Vanguard advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Lindenwood-Belleville, 66-59, in the first round and Montana State – Northern, 71-65, in the second round
- Saturday's game will be the tenth appearance in the quarterfinals for the Lions
- Vanguard is shooting 43.9 percent from the field during the national championship. This is the fifth best mark at the national championship
- The Lions are collecting 19.8 offensive rebounds per game, which is the most in the NAIA
- Claire Lamunu leads the Lions in scoring as she is averaging 21.9 points per game. She is the only Lion scoring in double figures
- The Lions are averaging 74.2 points per game while only allowing 51.6. They are holding opponents to shoot 33.6 percent from the floor on the season
- Claire Lamunu was named the Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year
 
Winner Moves On
The winner of the Owls and Lions contest will advance to the semifinals, which will take place on Monday, March 20. They will play the winner of Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho) and Westmont (Calif.) contest.
