Owls Tennis Programs Have Successful Weekend at Wheatstate Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TOPEKA, Kan. – (Full Results) The William Woods University men's and women's tennis programs had a successful weekend at the Wheatstate Tournament, hosted by Emporia State University, at the Kossover Tennis Complex in Topeka, Kansas this past weekend.
 
The Owls men's team returns to action on Saturday, September 16th when they host Lindenwood University at the Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex. On the women's side, the Owls are off until they travel to Bourbonnais, Illinois for the ITA Central Region Championships.
 
Men's
In Singles "A" the Owls had Christopher Vleeming Ortiz defeated Julien Bodin, 6-1, 6-2. He played his second-round matchup against Alejandro Plaza where he dropped the first set but bounced back to win the match, 1-6, 6-2, 10-6. He lost in the semifinals to Andrei Masin, 6-1, 6-2. Also playing in the "A" draw was Christian Barbieri and Oscar Barreiro. Barbieri dropped his first set 6-4, 6-4. Barrerio lost 6-4, 6-2, before bouncing back to win 8-2 to Juan Navarro and 9-8 (6) to Blake Hunter.
 
In the "B" draw Oscar Donker was defeated 6-0, 7-5 by Hector Carrillo. He won 9-7 against Tadious. Jesus Amezcua defeated Michael Moody. Amezcua came back and beat Tarass Thevenaux won 5-7, 6-0, 10-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Amezcua won his semifinals match against Raul Dicu 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 before falling in the championship.
 
Nathan Cooke, Juan Esteban Duran played in the "C" draw. Cooke was defeated 7-5, 6-0, in the first round. He came back and won 8-4 in the second round. In the third round, he defeated Juan Jimenez 8-4 and won 8-5 in the consolation championship over Jacob Turley. Duran came in and lost 6-4, 6-2, before winning 8-2 over Tommy Hunter.
 
Benni Tzchentke and Jack Campbell played in the "D" draw. Tzchentke won 6-3, 6-1 in his first match before being knocked out. Campbell received a first round bye before falling in the second set. Marcos Vinicius Prates Constantino played in the "E" draw and did not win a match. In the "F" draw, Harrison Laurent won his first-round match 6-2, 6-7, 10-3 over Keegan Estrella.
 
In doubles action, Barreiro and Ortiz came away with an 8-4 win in the first round over Lahlou and Carrillo. They then won 9-7 over Cameron and Mota before falling in the championship match, 8-2. In the second doubles draw, WWU dropped its first match 8-5 before winning the next two, 8-5, 8-3. Donker and Cooke played in the third doubles action and won 8-3 over Millan Muzenyi in the first round before losing in the second round 8-6. Constantino and Tzchentke paired up in the fourth doubles draw and lost its first two matches. Duran and Campbell lost in the first round 8-3, before winning the second match, 8-1.
 
"This was our first matches of the season and it was good to see where we are and what we need to improve on," head coach Justin Stuckey stated. "I thought that we had some great showings with Christopher making it to the semifinals in singles as well as making the finals of the A flight doubles with Oscar and Jesus making it to the finals of the B Flight in singles earning his first wins as an Owl. We also had a number of freshmen earn their first collegiate victory's in Harrison, Benni and Nate. We will take this and learn from it as we get ready for our next game this weekend."
 
Women's
Playing in the Singles "A" draw Karyna Sagali was defeated 7-5, 6-3, in her first match. Sagali bounced back wining 8-4 over Kate Taylor-Doran and 8-4 over Anna Barraza. Also in the "A" draw for the Owls was Chelsea Steward, who lost, 1-6, 6-3, 10-5 in her match. She won her second match, 8-5 before falling in her third match 8-0. The final player for the Owls in Draw "A" was Zlata Shuraeva, who won 6-2, 7-5, before falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-10, in the second round.
 
In the Singles "B" draw the owls had Anna Zavala, Julia Mulder and Abigail Lemberger in the field. Zavala won her first two matches of the draw. She defeated Tamara Santos 7-5, 6-2, and followed it up with a 6-4, 6-0, victory over Silvana Caceres. She was defeated by Jacqueline Engelbrecht 7-6, 7-5. Julia Mulder was defeated 6-2, 6-4, in her first-round match before winning 8-2 over Savannah Martin. Lemberger dropped her first match, 6-3, 6-1, before winning 8-1.
 
In doubles action, Mulder and Steward were victories in its first match, 8-2, however they were defeated 8-5 in the second round by Taylor and Robertson. In the second doubles draw, Zavala and Shuraeva won 8-3 over Corfield and Rodriguez. The followed up with an 8-1 victory over Perrsons and Flaxbeard. Zavala and Shuraeva were defeated 8-6 in the championship by Romos and Caceres of Emporia State. Rounding out the Owls was Sagalai and Lemberger in the third draw of doubles. Sagalai and Lemberger won 8-3 over Robbins and Good, then won 8-5 over Harris and Berezintsev before winning 8-3 in the championship over Barnhard and Francis.
 
"It was evident we played well in doubles this week with having a team make it to the semifinals with two others making the finals and one of them winning a championship in Karyna and Abigail," remarked head coach Justin Stuckey. "Singles wise we did well collectively also against strong competition."
