Women’s Tennis Sends Two to ITA National Championship

Box Score BOURBONAIS, Ill. – The William Woods University women's tennis team won the singles draw and doubles draw at the ITA Regional to advance to the ITA Oracle Cup on October 11-15 in Rome, Georgia.

"It was a great weekend for the ladies practically for Zlata as she won the singles tournament without losing a set and partnering with Chelsea to win the doubles," Head Coach Justin Stuckey remarked. "The fact that she was able to win both tournaments in 95-degree weather is even that much more impressive. Chelsea also played extremely well in the singles to make it to the finals as the #5 seed without losing a set. Ana to be a freshman and make it to the semifinals of the singles shows also just how much talent she has and her and Karyna playing together for doubles and making it to the semifinals is a great accomplishment as well."
 
In singles action for the Owls, second seed Zlata Shuraeva led the Owls. She had a first round bye before winning, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round over Mel Schlaeger. In the quarterfinals, Shuraeva won 6-1, 6-4 over eighth seed Dana Huck to advance to the Semifinals. In the semifinals, Shuraeva continued to dominate as she won 6-2, 6-4 over third seed Victoria Monakhova, to advance to the championship. Shuraeva knocked off teammate and fifth seed, Chelsea Steward, 6-4, 6-3, in the championship to advance to the ITA National Championship.
 
Fifth seed Chelsea Steward also had strong single performances at the ITA Regional Championships. The fifth seed won her first set, 6-0, 6-1, over Emily Zalewski. In the second round, Steward won, 6-3, 6-1 over Kaylynn Gruber advancing to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Steward won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, over fourth seed Livia Hollosy and advanced to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Steward matched up against teammate, Ana Zavala. Steward came away with the win 6-4, 6-4, advancing to the Championship match. In the championship, Steward fell to teammate Shureva, 6-4, 6-3.
 
Seventh seed Ana Zavala was the third Owl to advance to the Semifinals in the singles draw. Zavala won her first-round matchup against Emily Stevenson of St. Louis College of Pharmacy, 6-0, 6-1. In the second round she won, 6-4, 6-1, over Chelsea Kelly. In the quarterfinals, Zavala knocked off top seed and teammate, Karyna Sagalai, 6-0, 6-4. Zavala was knocked out in the semifinals by fifth seed and teammate Chelsea Steward, 6-4, 6-4.
 
The Owls opened with the top seed in the singles draw with Karyna Sagalai. She received a bye in the first round before winning, 6-3, 6-2, against Kaitlin Burguieres. Sagalai singles draw came to an end when teammate Ana Zavala knocked her out in the quarterfinals.
 
The Owls had two unranked players in the draw in Julia Mulder and Abigail Lemberger. Mulder was defeated in the first round by Sofia Scholl, 6-1, 6-4. Lemberger was also defeated in the first round by Kimberly Tait, 6-2, 3-6, 10-3.
 
In doubles action, the Owls had three doubles teams in the draw and all three doubles teams were in the top eight seeds. The top seeded doubles team was Chelsea Steward and Zlata Shuraeva. They had a first round by and won its second-round match 8-0 over Bush and Graham. In the quarterfinals, they won 8-2 over fifth seed Tait and Kelly. In the semifinals, the Owls faced fourth seed, Ana Zavala and Karyna Sagalai, their Owl teammates, and Steward and Shuraeva won 8-2, advancing to the championship. In the Championship, Steward and Shuraeva defeated second seed, Hollosy and Keller 8-1, advancing to the ITA National Championship.
 
The fourth seed in the doubles action was Ana Zavala and Karyna Sagalai. They had a first round bye and then defeated Kupiec and Schlaeger in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Zavala and Sagalai defeated Lopez and Scholl, 8-4, advancing to the semifinals. They were eliminated in the semifinals by top seed, Steward and Shuraeva, 8-2.
 
Abigail Lemberger and Julia Mulder were the sixth ranked doubles team in the draw. They had a first round bye and in the second round defeated Belschner and Coose, 8-2. Lemberger and Mulder were eliminated in the quarterfinals by second seed Hoolosy and Keller, 8-0.
