Women’s Tennis Falls to Wash U, 5-4

Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University women's tennis team, sponsored by Fulton Medical Center, was defeated by the 12th ranked team in NCAA Division III Washington University in St. Louis, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon.

"This one really hurts," remarked head coach Justin Stuckey. "We played really good doubles today. However, in the singles matches as a team we didn't handle the pressure situations the right way. We have to shake this loss off quickly as we have another one tomorrow against Lindenwood-Belleville."
 
The Owls came out strong in doubles play against the Bears, as they took two of three. WWU dropped No. 1 doubles but the team of Zlata Shuraeva and Ana Zavala defeated Lily Schroeder and Lisa Chionis, 8-2. No. 3 doubles team of Felicia Cesar and Chelsea Steward defeated Ashley Lessen and Kate Lee, 8-2.
 
William Woods continued to hold great momentum in the match as during play, they won the first set in five of the six singles matches. Chelsea Steward gave the Owls its third point with a 6-3, 6-0, victory over Laurel Wagner in No. 6 singles. WWU's last point of the day came in No. 5 singles when Felicia Cesar defeated Libby Jubas, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.
 
The Owls dropped No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles in three sets. Wash U took No. 3 singles and the match 5-4 over the Owls.  
 
WWU returns to action on Wednesday, April 18th when they host Lindenwood University-Belleville at the Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex. The match is set to start at 11 a.m. The Owls will honor its seniors before the match.
