FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's and women's tennis programs, sponsored by Fulton Medical Center, head to St. Louis, Missouri to participate in the Heart of America/American Midwest Conference Unaffiliated Group Tournament this weekend.

On the women's side, the Owls enter the tournament with an 13-6 record on the season. WWU enters the tournament winners of three of its last four. The only loss for the Owls was to NCAA Division I Missouri State. William Woods is the tournament's top seed and will play the winner of the No. 8 and No. 9 seed match, Stephens and Freed-Hardeman.

On the season, the Owls are 35-16 in doubles and 58-38 in singles action. Leading the Owls in wins on the season is
Julia Mulder, who is 10-1 in singles on the season.
Felicia Cesar follows with a record of 8-2 on the season.

On the national ranking side, WWU is led byÂ
Zlata Shuraeva. Shuraeva enters this new ranking as the 24th ranked singles player in the nation. She was ranked seventh earlier ranked this season, which was the highest ranked women's single player in William Woods history.

On the men's side, the Owls enter the tournament with an 11-6 record on the season. This season they set school records, jumping to No. 6 in the NAIA Men's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 poll. The men's team enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed and will open play against the No. 8 seed St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

On the season, the Owls men's team is 27-21 in doubles and 61-32 in singles play. Leading the Owls in wins isÂ
Christopher Vleeming Ortiz. Vleeming Ortiz has a record of 11-3 in singles action on the season. He is four wins playing No. 2 and No. 3 singles this season. He finds himself ranked No. 13 in the NAIA in singles in the latest ITA rankings.

The Owls men's tennis team has five players who are ranked in the top 50 singles players in the NAIA.
Javier Callejo ranks the highest as he is ranked No. 6 in the nation. Vleeming Ortiz follows at No. 13.
Christian Barbieri (No. 18),
Oscar Barreiro (No. 21), and
Jesus Amezcua (No. 41st) also find themselves in the top 50.

Besides having singles players in the ITA rankings, WWU placed two doubles teams in the top 25. Callejo and Vleeming Ortiz team up to be ranked fourth in the nation; while Stefan Smic and
Christian Barbieri are 21st in the nation.
