Women’s Tennis Defeats Seventh Seed Northwestern Ohio

Box Score MOBILE, Ala. – For the third straight season, the William Woods University women's tennis team, sponsored by Fulton Medical Center, has advanced to the Quarterfinals of the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championships.

The Owls jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in doubles action against the Racers. Felicia Cesar and Chelsea Steward won 8-3 over Naa Ankrah and Frederique Span in No. 3 doubles. Teammates, Julia Mulder and Abigail Lemberger followed with an 8-4 victory in No. 2 doubles. The only loss in doubles action came in No. 1 doubles when Alisa Reshetnikova and Valeriya Kolegova defeated Zlata Shuraeva and Ana Zavala, 9-7.
 
WWU need to claim three singles of the six singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals, but it was Northwestern Ohio that struck first with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in No. 3 singles tying the match at 2-2.
 
Zlata Shuraeva put the Owls back on top as she was the second singles match done. She defeated Camila Puente, 6-0, 6-3, in No. 2 singles. The lead went to 4-2 in favor of the Owls after Ana Zavala defeated Melena Lopez, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 4 singles.
 
Northwestern Ohio claimed its third point of the match when Reshetnikova won 6-3, 6-3, in No. 1 singles.
 
Chelsea Steward clinched the match for the Owls with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Frederique Span in No. 6 singles.
 
In the final singles match of the day, Felicia Cesar was up 6-4, 5-2 in the fifth singles match.
 
With the win, the Owls advance to play the second seed Georgia Gwinnett College tomorrow in the Quarterfinals. The match is set to start around 12 p.m.
