Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 6 William Woods University women's tennis team was defeated by NCAA Division II Rockhurst University, 4-3, in their spring season opener Friday afternoon.

With the Hawks winning two of three in doubles play, they earned one point to give them a 1-0 advantage over the Owls heading into singles play. Chelsea Steward and Korina Zarari finished first in the No. 3 doubles spot, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead over the Hawks. Ana Zavala and Zlata Shuraeva challenged Rockhurst in the No. 1 spot but fell, 7-6 (7-3). The No. 2 doubles team, Felicia Cesar and Karyna Sagalai, finished next, falling to Anilu Barraza and Octavia Malin, 6-2.
 
The Owls three wins came in the No. 4-6 singles slots. Felicia Cesar battled for the win in the No. 4 singles spot, defeating her opponent 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6). Ana Zavala defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot, and Karyna Sagalai came away with a win in the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-2. 
 
The Owls next compete at Missouri Valley on Saturday, Feb. 23, starting at 10 a.m. They then face McPherson at 3 p.m. following the first match.
