Women's Soccer Teams Up with University in Suicide Prevention Week

FULTON, Mo. - William Woods University will observe Suicide Prevention Week across campus Sept. 8-14 with events for students, faculty and staff that raise awareness about this important issue.

According to the Missouri Assessment of College Health and Behavioral 2018 Survey estimates that one in five Missouri college students report experiencing suicidal thoughts in the past year, often the result of undiagnosed or untreated mental health concerns. Here are Woods, several faculty and staff have become RESPOND trained, in addition, to having treatment resources and counseling on campus.  WWU has partnered with several Suicide Prevention foundations in the past to help bring awareness as well. National Suicide Prevention Week is cornerstone to promoting resources and building connections that facilitate suicide prevention, as well as, helping to rid the stigma of Mental Illness.

Counseling and Health Services offers its services to each of William Woods traditional students and staff.  Services are available M-F 8am-4pm

Suicide Prevention Week events include:

Sept. 10, 12:30pm:  Peggy Reed-Lohmeyer, who is a clinical social worker, will speak on behalf of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This will be a LEAD event.  She will be showing a film that is for college students and what to do if you or a friend experiences suicidal thoughts. Sept. 10, 6pm: Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend the WWU Women's Soccer game.  WWU Women's Soccer and WWU Athletic Training Services have partnered to bring awareness to Suicide Prevention Week.  The soccer team and Athletic Trainers will be wearing purple and teal shirts throughout the day and for pregame.  These shirts will be displaying the National Suicide Prevention Hotline on the back.   There will be a 50/50 raffle that will begin the week prior and continue through half time of the game.  All proceeds of the 50/50 raffle will be donated to the StuCrew22 Foundation out of Columbia Missouri. 

Sept. 12, 6pm: Beth Eiken with Stu22Crew is coming to speak the evening of Thursday, September 12th for a 6:00 p.m. LEAD event. 

Sept. 14, 12pm: The WWU Softball team and Athletic Training Services will be wearing purple and teal Suicide Prevention shirts during their scrimmage with State Fair Community College.
