MANSFIELD, Conn. – William Woods University alumna Carol (Leimer) Callan was announced as one of the 12 finalists in consideration for the 2020 Women's Basketball Hall of Fame induction Thursday evening during the Baylor at Connecticut game.
"It is an incredible honor to be recognized for work that never really feels like work," stated Callan. "This allows me to reflect on the influences on my life including William Woods College where I was given great opportunities to develop and learn as a leader. From the supportive professors, coaches and administrators to my friends who remain friends today, it has allowed me to realize the importance of relationships and prepared me for my journey."
The 2020 Class will be selected from the 12 finalists on February 10, 2020 during the Connecticut at South Carolina game. The 2020 Class will then be inducted on June 13, 2020.
Hall of Fame Release
Callan, nominated as a contributor, graduated from William Woods in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and physical education. With the introduction of intercollegiate sports at WWU in 1974, Callan played just one season on the Owls basketball team. She averaged 16.75 points per game in the opening season, totaling 201 points.
Callan currently serves at the USA Basketball Women's National Team Director, a role she has filled since 1996. In her 23 years, she has directed gold medal-winning teams in six straight Olympic Games. She is currently the chair on the National Team Steering Committee, National Team Player Selection Committee, and the Developmental National Team Committee. As of June 2019, she is the President of FIBA Americas. She is on the FIBA Americas Women's Commissions, the WBCA Board of Directors and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Board of Directors.
