Owls' Fourth Quarter Push Not Enough in Saturday's Loss

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team fell short in their comeback attempt Saturday afternoon versus Lyon College. The Owls fell 67-59, bringing them to 5-12 on the season with a 3-7 conference mark.
 
 

The Owls cap off their home stretch on Thursday, Jan. 19, with a 5:30 p.m. tip versus Missouri Baptist.
 
 

55 – The Owls' starting five scored 55 of the team's 59 points.
40 – The Owls scored 40 points in the paint.
21 – Sydney Booker led the Owls with 21 points as she hit eight jumpers and went 5-for-5 from the foul line.
16 – Natalie Thomas added 16 points to the board (6-16 FG, 4-6 FT).
13 – Jersee Wren scored 13 points (6-12 FG).
7 – Sydney Booker pulled down a team-high seven boards, and Mariah Prince grabbed a team-high seven steals.

The game started slow with the Owls putting up four points over the first four minutes while Lyon was silent. The Owls maintained the lead until Lyon put together an 8-0 run over a two-and-a-half-minute span to take a five-point lead, 12-7. MaKennna Wuelling ended the quarter with a three to cut the Owls' deficit to two, 12-10.
 
Sydney Booker evened the score on the Owls' first play of the second quarter. Lyon pushed their lead to seven four minutes in but back-to-back jumpers from Booker put the game to three with just under five to play, 21-18. A three-point play from Jersee Wren brought the game within two with three minutes to go, but Lyon closed out the half outscoring the Owls 10-4 to send the teams into halftime with the Owls trailing 33-25.
 
Lyon pushed their lead to double-digits in the third quarter and went into the final quarter with a 54-40 lead.
 
A 13-3 run with two fast break layups, two jumpers and five free throws kicked off the fourth quarter for the Owls, cutting the game to four four minutes in, 57-53. Lyon pushed the spread back to nine. With under a minute to play, Thomas hit a free throw to bring the game to five, but that was the closest the Owls would get. The Owls finished out the game with an eight-point loss, 67-59.
