Owls Grab Road Win at Cottey

NEVADA, Mo. – After an extremely slow first half for both teams, the William Woods University women's basketball team used a strong last two minutes of the game with clutch back-to-back three-pointers to top Cottey College Tuesday evening. 
 
The 50-43 win improved the Owls to 7-16 on the season with a 5-11 conference mark. It served as the first road win of the season.
 
 

45 – The starting five scored 45 of the Owls' 50 points on the day.
19 – The Owls outscored Cottey 19-11 in the fourth quarter to grab the win.
13 – Sydney Booker and Natalie Thomas each recorded 13 points.
12 – The Owls scored just 12 points in the first half while holding Cottey to 10.
10 – Sydney Booker pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Jersee Wren added 10 points to the win.
5 – Natalie Thomas recorded a team-high five assists.
 
 

Sydney Booker scored first, but Cottey took the lead and stayed one step ahead of the Owls. At the end of 10 minutes, Cottey led 8-7.
 
It took the Owls three minutes to score in the second quarter, but the layup from Booker gave the Owls a one-point lead, 9-8. The Owls held Cottey from scoring until under one minute to go in the half, but the Owls only scored five total in the half themselves. Heading into halftime, the Owls led 12-10.
 
A three from Katie Keilholz gave the Owls a seven-point lead three minutes into the second half, 22-15. Cottey responded with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to take a two-point lead, 24-22. The Owls evened the score twice, but Cottey held a one-point lead heading into the final quarter, 32-31.
 
Two free throws from Booker put the Owls in the lead to start the fourth, and a layup from Mariah Prince gave the Owls a six-point lead four minutes in, 39-33. With just under two minutes to play, Cottey took the lead on two good free throws, 40-39. On the next play, Thomas hit a clutch three to take back the lead. Wren followed with another three to give the Owls a five-point lead with 40 seconds on the clock. Cottey resorted to fouling, putting the Owls to the line three times. The Owls went 5-for-6, completing an 11-3 run in the final minute and a half to secure the 50-43 win.
 
 

The Owls travel to Harris-Stowe State University on Thursday, Feb. 9, for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
