Box Score NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Going 720 minutes of American Midwest Conference play without conceding a goal and netting 23 goals in the process is undoubtedly the stuff of champions, and it was for (RV) William Woods University (10-2-6, 6-0-2 AMC), winning its second AMC regular season title - first since 2017 - in its final campaign in the conference. The Owls only needed one goal to get the job done, beating Central Baptist College (5-13, 2-6) 1-0 Saturday at Centennial Soccer Park.
While it took a team effort to reach the accomplishment, WWU earned the AMC regular season championship thanks to
TJ Mathias' unassisted goal 41:50 into the match.
Mathias' tally was one of four Owls shots on goal in the first half, and they had five shots total, as the Mustangs didn't register a single shot. It was a tighter second half, with WWU outshooting CBC five (two on goal) to four (one on goal).
"Overall proud of how we played," William Woods men's soccer coach
Tommy Nienhaus said. "Wasn't always pretty, but we got the goal we needed, and we closed the game out with another shutout."
William Woods goalkeeper
Matthew Dworak (4-1-3), who was between the posts for 540 minutes (75 percent) of the Owls' AMC contests this year, stopped one shot in as many attempts to notch his team-leading fifth shutout in 11 matches this season. Four of Dworak's clean sheets were in AMC play, and he posted 17 saves in seven conference contests.
Shot-stoppers
Wil Rieves (135 minutes) and
Marcelo Rumbos (45 minutes) also contributed to WWU shutting out all eight of its AMC regular-season opponents. Rieves had a shutout and made nine saves in two AMC matches, while Rumbos stopped three shots in one game.
Senior
Lubos Polacko led Woods' attack in AMC games, recording a team-high three goals and seven points.
Moritz Schafer and
Britton Purewal had a co-team-high two assists, and another offensive standout was
Benjamin Lachaize, who was second on the team with five points (two goals and an assist).
The quest to do something the Owls haven't done before, win an AMC Tournament championship - in their 27th and final season in the AMC - begins with their quarterfinal game against No. 8 seed University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis (1-14, 1-7 AMC) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at North Campus Athletic Complex in Fulton. No. 1 seed WWU is 9-1 all-time against the Eutectics, and the Owls won the regular season matchup 6-0 last Saturday on their first-ever Homecoming weekend.
