FULTON, Mo. -
Belle Boschert put herself top of the William Woods University (10-6-3, 5-2 American Midwest Conference) record book in career shutouts with her 16th, as the third-seeded Owls easily won 4-0 over sixth-seeded Williams Baptist University (4-13, 2-5) in the AMC Tournament quarterfinals Friday at North Campus Athletic Complex.
"We can change a game when we come out and score in the first minute," William Woods women's soccer coach
Lauren Robb said. "That momentum really motivated our girls to turn up the offense and continue to work in the final third. The goals were created with fast possession and selflessness. We're ready to push each other and prepare for the semifinals."
The Owls weren't just adding to the record book, as they defined what shutting down an opponent looks like in the dictionary by tallying 35 shots (17 on goal) while holding the Eagles to no shots. WWU had 24 shots (11 on goal) in the first half, and in the second half, it notched 11 shots (six on goal).
Hannah Loethen netted her first career hat trick in a rapid 14:30 the last time the Owls met Williams Baptist, and this time, it was the swift first goal that excited The Woods fans. Just 47 seconds into the game, Loethen found the back of the net off an assist from fellow first-team All-AMC selection
Lauren Helmert.
Thirty minutes later, the Owls got their second goal scored by their No. 9,
Marissa Kiemen. Just 45 seconds after that, Champions of Character Team honoree
Wilson Hornsby provided second-team All-AMC midfielder
Maddy Schrader's fourth goal this season, which sent WWU into the halftime break up 3-0.
Loethen and Kiemen were involved in half of the Owls' four goals, and the pair combined for WWU's fourth and final goal only 2:50 into the second half. With that scoring play, Loethen extended her team-leading goal total to nine and points total to 19 this season, while Kiemen registered a career-high three points.
Moments after the final whistle of William Woods' AMC quarterfinal win, the Owls congratulated senior shot-stopper, Duchesne alumna Boschert on breaking the program's 18-year-old career shutouts record with her 16th - her second straight clean sheet and season-high sixth. Boschert overtook Kristen Antle (2003-04, '06), a native of Gillette, Wyoming, for the Owls' career shutouts record.
The Owls head to Creve Couer to face rival, No. 2 seed Missouri Baptist University (8-8-1, 5-1-1 AMC) in the AMC Tournament semifinals at 7 p.m. Monday at Spartan Field.
Tess Roberts scored in the 50th minute in their regular season meeting as William Woods fell 3-1 to the Spartans on Oct. 29 in Fulton.
