In a Game of Two Halves, WWU Falls to MBU in AMC Semifinals

Box Score CREVE COUER, Mo. - No. 3 seed William Woods University (10-7-3, 5-2 American Midwest Conference) put five shots on goal to No. 2 seed Missouri Baptist University's (9-8-1, 5-1-1) three, including four in the first half to the Spartans' none. Despite leading in that key attacking statistic, the Spartans scored with 1:24 left to end the Owls' AMC Tournament run in the semifinals with a 1-0 defeat Monday at Spartan Field.

In a game of two halves, William Woods outshot Missouri Baptist 6-2 in the first half. Hannah Loethen put her two shots on goal, including one that hit the crossbar. Likely in her final game as an Owl, Loethen did all she could to capitalize and create good scoring chances, but all were denied, whether it was the post or one of Spartans goalkeeper Gabby Mattli's (5-4-1) four saves in the first half - she finished the contest with five.

MBU flipped the script in the second half, outshooting the Owls 7-1. With the clock ticking down and overtime seemingly on its way, the Spartans' Gabbie Wood scored the contest's lone goal with 1:24 left to send the hosts to the AMC championship. It was the second-team All-AMC forward's co-team-high eighth goal this season.

Belle Boschert (5-5-3), WWU's all-time career shutout leader, started what was likely her final match between the posts and made two saves.

The Owls won a game more overall and in the AMC than a season ago, and they scored three more goals and conceded 16 fewer goals in 2024 than they did in '23.

Not only did Monday's contest likely mark the end of William Woods' career shutout leader Boschert's career, but it also was for two more of the best ever to wear an Owls uniform, five-time All-AMC selection Lauren Helmert and two-time first-team All-AMC honoree Loethen.

"It was a heartbreaker in St. Louis tonight," William Woods women's soccer coach Lauren Robb said. "Not the way we wanted our season to end. Everyone worked till the very end. It's especially tough knowing this team won't be same. These seniors and fifth-year players have made the biggest impact. They've created a culture that made it the most enjoyable season I've ever been a part of. To them - thank you and we love you."
