Box Score 2 JOPLIN, Mo. - Rounding out its planned four-game slate with an ad hoc doubleheader against Graceland (7-3), William Woods (6-3) picked up a big 11-4 win in game one but wasn't able to finish off the game two comeback, falling 4-3.
Kamron Morriss was solid in both games for WWU, going 3-6 with four RBI in the doubleheader.
Jack Niggemeier got the offense rolling for Woods right off the bat in game one, smoking a double down the left field line. After an errant sacrifice attempt, WWU loaded the bases before a single by Morriss scored Niggemeier and
Matt Hanson.
WWU managed to fill the bases again, with a two-out walk to
Ethan Jones scoring
Sean Goings. The Owls stranded all three runners to end the inning, but made up for it in the bottom of the second and third innings, scoring three in each frame.
Graceland managed to score in the top of the fourth and top of the sixth, but Woods had a response in its half of the inning on both occasions.
The Yellowjackets tried to start a rally in the top of the seventh, but WWU found its way out of danger and held on for the win.
For the second half of the doubleheader, the teams flipped positions on the scoreboard, with WWU leading off the top of the first. Unfortunately, the home side of the scoreboard again saw crooked numbers in the bottom of the first, as Graceland hung four on the board, first from a one-out two-run homer by Zach Tanabe and then a two-out two-RBI triple from William Pagan.
William Woods settled into a defensive rhythm after the first-inning outburst, allowing just three Graceland hits over the next five innings.
The Owls threatened in the fifth but weren't able to score until the top of the sixth, as a two-out double by Morriss scored
Cade Irwin and Niggemeier, but
Jacob McWhirter couldn't keep the rally going.
Joe Celeste gave Woods a spark of hope in the top of the seventh as he led off with a pinch hit solo shot to left, but the Owls couldn't fan the ember into flames.
Woods returns to southwest Missouri next weekend, continuing its road stand with a four-game set against future AMC foe Mission University. First pitch on Friday is set for 1 p.m.
